Probably my friend's mother never bothered to cook them hence the bugs were not killed off and I got sick.
One time a few years back I got a case of Campylobacter from some dodgy chicken and it was no laughing matter [xx(]
So far as I'm concerned, there's only one rule to follow with meat and that is to COOK THE DAMN STUFF PROPERLY!!!

I think I heard somewhere a while back that NZ has one of the highest rates of foodborne illness in the developed world?
I had never actually heard of eating raw savs until this article, my mum was a stickler for making sure everything was cooked through and through!
Worst thing with salmonella is that you can also become a carrier and pass it on to all your nearest and dearest for a very long time! [V]

When my son was a bit smaller the butcher asked me very quietly (out of the way of PC ears of course) if he would like a saveloy, of course he said yes, he loved it and amazingly lived to tell the tale, who would've thought that he could survive a free saveloy!!!!
Each to their own, but it never did me any harm and I got one a week for years, I'm with Chooky.

NZ certainly has the highest rate of Campylobacter associated illness per captia in the developed world which will give us a biased high overall value but with respect to other food borne diseases we are no worse than anywhere else and in many cases better than most.quote:Originally posted by tigger

As kids we had the cheerios from the butcher to munch on while we waited....and we also used to get, from mum, the rind of the bacon to chew before it was cooked....no idea about how the bacon was processed (I was but a nipper at the time) but it was sliced at the butcher while you waitedand came home in a paper parcel!

I must admit I do steal the occasional one when I am at a kids party, along with the chocolate ricies cakes full of lard but oh so yummy [

Whatever do you mean, MM? [:0] Mystery meat with lots of numbered additives all squished up together with a lurid artificially coloured skin and a chemical taste? [}]

It knocked the stuffing out of him for weeks. Imagine what it would have done to a small child! He hasn't gone near them since.
