Stop skitting you! Laugh. I wish.

Seriously this is for a friend (rural Te Puke) as I am on Broadband and getting 4.3Mbps according to SpeedTest as the one I use to check. I'm ok with that being on one of the oldest exchanges in NZ! Maybe they have upgraded it as that seems to be a good result for a rural area.

Farmside put me onto this one the other day.

I'm on satellite with Farmside but things are really slow & sometimes a page won't load at all. They have told me that there is nothing wrong with my connection with them.

They said my speed should be between .97 & 1 which it is. This indicates that there must be a problem with my computer. Probably time for a visit to the computer doctor.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like the same situation we had with Farmside. The problem was not so much with the download but instead is upload related. Transmitting data is a to and fro thing and upload quality is important in this respect.

From what I can understand about satellite based systems the satellite has no problem beaming into you but getting the signal back to the satellite requires the dish to be very accurately aligned. The FS tech who did ours didn't seem to have a clue about getting this right and also couldn't really be stuffed.

What is your upload speed and what is FS supposed to be supplying?

You don't really need to use a speed test to check a dial-up connection. The connection status icon that will appear at the right of the task bar when the modem is connected will show the speed at which the modem has connected. Just hover the mouse over the icon. The maximum speed a dial-up modem will connect at is 56kb/s.

Organix, that's interesting about upload. Have just tested both & download was 1m & upload 0.19m! Bit of a difference.

I was on Farmside's satellite a couple of years ago & then moved to present house. Same technician set it up at both houses and I can't recall any problems. However, this time around it was a difference technician, so perhaps he may not have lined it up that well.

What do you think?

........

What do you think?

Firstly upload speed is usually significantly less than download, and most broadband plans are so structured, so that's not an issue. An upload of 256kb (0.25Mbs) is regarded as the minmum for 'broadband' to work effectively which for you is an issue.

The data transfer process goes something like this; a 'parcel' of data is requested by your computer (upload). The 'parcel' is sent (download). Your computer confirms receipt of data and requests another parcel (upload), etc. Non transmission (or corruption) of the upload will cause a break in data transfer which usually requires you to try again from scratch, or corrupted data received.

I would think that the upload is your problem and assuming you are on FS's 'Discovery' plan you are being shortchanged by at least 20% on your upload which should be 0.25 Mb/s. Also be aware that upload in particular will deteriorate in bad weather such as rain (rain fade) so FS should be including a safety margin to achieve their minimum stated rates.

Their website states: Plans start from 512Kbps download and 256Kbps upload, don't accept less!

Pretty good upload. I assume the connection this applies to uploads significant amounts of data, hence the almost equal up/down rates. Pretty sharp ping value too

Computer consultant OH works from home alot, with remote connection, helped the installer to ensure that was set up well. But it is so much better than anyone else we know. Our friends on Xtra crawl by comparison.

Broadband envy ? [;)]
On our motorcycle forum the member with the best result came in at 66.66 DL/8.34 UL, which I expect was a university connection or similar (in Christchurch).
