Home remedies for flu symptoms

Old fashioned chicken soup has been scientifically proven to assist with dealing with the symptoms and recovery of the flu.
So I have just got a nice free range home reared Rooster out of the freezer and put him on the cooktop to make stock for soup. I will be adding heaps of onions and garlic, lemon rind (near the end so as not to kill the vit c), and barley for all the vitamins in that. Maybe some cayene/chilli as it is a VitC catalyst and ginger.
Not only a great healthy meal, but handy to keep in the freezer for those "I'm not up to cooking" days. :D

Does anyone else have any useful out of the pantry type remedies for flu symptoms and recovery? :)

Have you been reading the Listener this week, Xartep? :D

Good article on what does work (chicken soup) and myths as well.

I've got some tried and true remedies, but would be interested to here what their "myths" are.

I think they call that chronicity - when you read something for the first time (me and the chicken soup being proven) and then see it elsewhere almost immediately (your post)

:D

It was looking at myths (kissing spreads colds, chills cause colds, feed a cold/starve a fever, Vit C prevents colds) and proven scientifically (chicken soup easing cold symptoms!)

I think the thing with VitC it not that it prevents colds (wouldn't that be nice and easy) but it assists with easing symptoms and moving the germs on. Quantities need to be quite high, and your body can't always deal with that so it ends up going down the loo! :D
That is where the cayenne comes it it helps your bodies uptake of VitC. A pinch of cayene in your OJ takes a bit of getting used to though LOL[;)]

Eww [xx(]

I swear by Lemsip, but that has the panadol in it too...so not really a home remedy. The only time I get headaches usually is when I have cold or flu as I get sinus infections in a flash also :(

hehehe

Lemon, Honey & Ginger maybe? You can aways take the paracetamol separately if you need it.
Lemsip is convenient though.
There is a stall at our farmers market selling a lemon honey cordial, very yummy, just add hot water and presto!

Whisky and honey??? [}:)]

Biggest thing for me when I am sick (which is rarely) - bed rest, or tucked up on the sofa with a blanket. If I have to keep getting up and down, and in and out of places where I get hot and cold and hot again, it takes longer to recover.

I usually try to stop when I first feel sick and have that very first day off. Usually it makes a heck of a difference to cutting out that long drawn out recovery...

AhHa the old whiskey trick, have to share this with you then...

Cold remedy, take ASAP when symptoms appear.
Juice and grated rind of one lemon - vitC and clears mucus
Grated fresh ginger - for catarrh
Good teaspoon Manuka Honey - anti germ etc
Couple of cloves crushed garlic - anti germ etc
Good pinch of cayenne - VitC catalyst, and raises body temp
Shot of whiskey (optional) - disguises the taste and makes you feel better about drinking this muck
Hot water to make up to one cup.
Drink as hot as you can.

Couple of Panadol if you have aches and pains but try to avoid as they will lower your body temp.

Go to bed with an extra blanket and a hot water bottle. You will sweat like a B@$tard and wake up feeling heaps better.

Phhhoooaww! [xx(] You forgot to specify to snuggle down in the spare bedroom, as you will be denied access by your spouse to your normal bed after taking that lot! :p [}:)]

black currant drinks from all those currants we "store" in the freezer, also stewed apples & plenty of water & of course chicken soup. I put 4 cartons in the freezer at the weekend,
