I like dogs..........but
Now I wouldn't mind my friends bringing their farm dogs onto my place as they are educated in farm ways and stay outside (having said that they don't bring them anyway) but I'm afraid I don't want my other friends bringing their little ankle biting and lack of discipline dogs who climb all over our furniture, slurp at the dinner table looking for tit-bits and scare the hell out of our cat and given half a chance yap at and upset my stock. Even being here on a lead still doesn't work for me as our friends may be staying for a night or two!
I fully understand that these small to medium and toy dogs are loved so dearly and treated like children by their owners but I feel the owners may be a little pissed off with me for not loving them as much as they do.
Am I a meany? do any of you others have a similar problem?

None of our friends have dogs that they bring here when they come to stay, we have the occasional visitor with a dog but they all know to keep them under control.
Perhaps suggest to them that they put them in a kennels when they come to visit you? I don't see why you should have to put up with annoying mutts on your own property if you are not so inclined!
At least with dogs there are kennels. Wish there was an equivalent for some kids! [}

My sister has been quite put out that I no longer allow her to bring her dog/s, especially when the latest is hardly bigger than a rat. The cats and other animals still recognise its species though... once they've noticed it's there, that is. One of the cats walked right up to it last time - I think it was sitting behind a small clump of grass.

I've got a friend who brings her 'inside' dog when she comes and I won't allow it inside to upset my cats, it goes looney outside so I usually end up putting it in my dogs run and letting mine (who behaves) run around

she can stay in cars for up to 5 hrs without feeling upset and we go for a walk down the road at a rest stop/beach etc.. then I make up for it that night or the next day.
I know we have a want- to -play- and -jump -up problem.. which I think everyone who has met her realises that is HER and ignore her for 15 mins and she calms down slightly.. but she is mine and not to be forced on others who dont luv the ugly mutt and her wagging behind.
dogs that come here and dont stay close, soon get removed from this planet by one dog hating donkey... so I dont need to say anything

Are your friends insisting that the dogs come inside?
As a dog owner I would never presume that my dogs are welcome and would check and abide by the house rules before taking them to stay with anyone and in fact when we have visitors, be they dog people or not our own "inside" dogs often get to be outside dogs (apart from the ancient fire-side dwelling one).
Even when staying at our own family holiday home we don't take the dogs in.
Interestingly none of my "doggy friends" have ever presumed to ask to have any of their dogs inside when staying but I guess that might be because they're all used to travelling and staying in their cars/trailers.
The last time we had friends staying the people total was 8 (including us) and the dog total was 30!!! (including ours). The neighbours were intrigued and impressed - they'd seen the utes and trailers but hadn't seen or heard any of the dogs. I'm with Tigger - I'd rather have 30 dogs staying than one child!
I would also never take my dogs into motels. We managed a 3 week holiday of both islands with five dogs staying in motels with the dogs staying in their trailer. Exercise was either on lead or we drove to parks/rivers etc.
It would be perfectly reasonable for you to ask that the dogs stay in the car or possibly in crates in your garage, and that they only be allowed out on your property on lead. There would be nothing wrong with that - it would just mean they would need to actually get out and exercise the dogs - i.e. take them for a lead walk - instead of letting them run around.

They never ever go out the front door here or the side gate to the drive way if they are not on a lead , and they know that.
I take them to the Olive grove, and if they are out of the wagon they are on a lead, otherwise they are happy enough to wait in the wagon. Take them to my parents place, and they wait in the wagon.
I am exactly the same as LittleLSB, if the people at the place say let the dogs out, i will , but they will be on leads
I also would never just "presume" my dogs are welcome .... but, if they are in my wagon with the windows 1/2 down, ( they never ever attempt to get out unless they are invited , and will wait at tailgate when its open to have leads put on befor they get down) then i will totally go ballistic if anyone winds the dogs up when they are safe in the wagon and doing nothing wrong ...... i personally do not give a toss ( if the people i am visiting's kids , or any one winds up my dogs) i will attack, and believe me.... the kids would have proffered i let the dogs out to attack rather than sit trough one of my attacks, if they had wound up my dogs for no reason

I do not bring them anywhere they are not welcome, and I'm certainly not cheeky enough to presume they are welcome anywhere, regardless if my friends have dogs or are animal lovers or whatnot.

It is anything but a tip but at the same time, I find that dog owners are incredibly respectful and so are the dogs! Permission is always asked if they want to walk the dogs over the paddocks and unless there are sheep present, no leads are required.
I take my little madam up to my Mum's retirement village and she is welcomed with open arms and a treat from the receptionist. The elderly people just love to meet her and hear all about her. The daft thing here is that she is shy of strangers and I tell them that. When after a few minutes she licks their hands, the joy is unbelieveable.
I guess what I am trying to say is that from my perspective, dogs are incredibly intuitive (mine have all been) and just instintively know what is ok and what isn't. Mind I spend a huge amount of time with my dogs (individually over the years) and maybe that is why they are what they are.
One massive hicup though - I nearly died of embarassment - was my dog peeing on Yakut's carpet. Why I will never know and she hasn't done it since - thank God! Yakut kindly forgave her but I still haven't!
