Had an appointment at the hospital today. Have had a very sore thumb for a number of months, got it checked at the Doctors, Ganglion. Appt at Waikato Hospital before Christmas to see a specialist - ganglion. Need further appt for treatment. Went today for ultrasound and steroid injection to fix it. Not looking forward to this as I had been told it can be very painful, but that's OK as my thumb will be fixed. YAY no mor pain! All fixed.......
NOT............
turns out it is arthritis of the CPC joint and this is as good as it gets!
I really thought it was going to be fixed... :( :(

Have you consulted a physiotherapist hand specialist? and was the person at Waikato a hand specialist?

That sounds a bit of an out on their part. Is the ganglion still there?

If it is, they can still treat the ganglion by sucking out the fluid and can't remember for sure but then given steroid injection. I know because a Specialist did this for my elderly mother who was and continues to be arthritic. Certainly a big improvement for her.

I had a ganglion but it was in the middle on the back of my hand, about the size of a golf ball, successfully treated in two visits.

didn't the old cure used to be give in a smack with the family bible (being the biggest heaviest book) to dispurse the build up of fluid and calcium?

Yes - a ganglion used to be hit with the family bible. It turns out that what 'they' thought was a ganglion growing in instead of out is actully nodules of 'bone?' caused by the arthritis with a layer of fluid over the top.

To add insult to injury I came down with what I thought was a 24 hour tummy bug, but turned out to be a 48 hour tummy bug, up and down all night, then fainted as I left the loo and woke up on the hall floor!!! [:I] [:0] :o

Isn't it ammmmmaaazing what men can sleep through!!

I had a steriod shot once upon a time, in my shoulder. I was in a sling for about 3 days, but after that, as good as rain until my car accident. So while the initial shot/time period right after might be painful, it was worth it to an extent.

Thoughts are with you AJ as I too battle life long (farming) injuries that are gradually turning into arthritic conditions - I think.

However, my Mum at 93 next month (and still sound of mind with minor hicups) really shouldn't be a measure of rhematoid arthritis that she only found out about 3 years ago that she had it, but the disjointed fingers and lack of circulation to the tips of her fingers are scary given I have my first nobble finger...in my 50's.

How many of us, despite how much we care about our parents verbalise "I have no intention of living past 80?" My whole family says that!
