CPU fan replacement was created by Andrea
All we can find on the broken fan is 'Intel'. We're not sure what we need to be looking for in terms of ID to start looking for a replacement, or where to be looking to buy one, but it's a Celeron microprocessor, if that matters.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Stu -- they (DH and DS) have been looking on TM, but it's hard to find out what kind of fan they need, and some of the sellers are completely clueless as to what they are actually selling. There's no other identifying info on the fan other than "Intel".
Perhaps I should have a look.......

It quite possibly looks like this:
www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/en/product/X7707
In which case you can just pop into Dickies and buy one. If it's different then try Jaycar (in Sydenham, but I never checked their website).
Dickies has a 7-day money back guarantee, so if it's wrong you can take it back.
This page (about 3/4 the way down) has a general description of fitting the fan to the CPU chip. Basically there's a spring clip across the cooler that latches onto one side of the chip socket, then another clip that is extremely tedious to attach to the other side.
www.dansdata.com/coolers.htm
Good luck. Oh, and don't worry too much about the heat transfer paste (but if you do get some use only a thin smear).

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't even seen the part myself, but was getting mighty fumed of 17-yr-old fuming. To be fair, he's been into 2 Dick Smiths in Chch, and into Jaycar and none of the places was able to help.
ame, I keep seeing the socket thing referred on TM auctions. What does it mean?
Thanks for your very kind offer, Stu. I must track down the part!

I guess that's what my DH means when he says "it's a hardware problem" when his code doesn't work properly...[

andrea .. the socket thingy you mention is the type of CPU socket that the processor is or fits into .. well both .. the processor is eg socketA or Socket 462 ... and the mother board that it plugs into must have that type of socket on it .
So in regards to fans .. i am guessing you mean things like " to fit a scoket A" or that
Thats why i asked if you had a pic ... as if its an older ( like more than about 6 months old) i may have one here that will fit
