After many months i am finally having surgery on Friday..great...BUT yesterday i had a sore throat and today im all sore in the sinus, sore in cheeks bones and that tingly nose feeling. arghh a cold coming on

My nose isnt blocked yet but it is now starting to be a bit like a on and off running tap....

Ok i dont want surgery postponed..if i can help it and I know they will if i get a full blown cold...so any old wives tales i can try to even delay the cold?

Unfortunately im on tablets at the moments that doesnt react well to alot of the cold drugs, sudafed and the likes, so i my chemist stuff is limited.

So im overdosing on Berrocca, had a hot bath, gargled warm salt water...anything else??? pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeese:( I am 80% sure it will be cancelled though but hey anything is worth a try

Darn. Not sounding good. The only thing I can add is plenty of garlic. I have 5000mg tablets and take at least two twice a day when a cold is threatening and about 2000mg of Vitamin C twice a day. I don't normally take any Vitamins so I think it shocks my system! Just have to get it at the first sign of a sniffle though so not confident it will work at this stage but nothing tried, nothing gained. All the best.

i was going to say mega doses of vitamin C - up to 4000mg a day.

I would go the Vit c route. I wouldn't risk taking Garlic so close to surgery, Garlic I have heard can thin the blood which is not too good so close to surgery. Check with a chemist.

I've heard of raw onion, too! Blech!!!

I'd take Vit C up to bowel tolerance (ie, take it in sufficiently high dose/s that you pooh through the eye of a needle), then decrease it just a tad (so you're not poohing through the eye of a needle).

You could try some echinachea (or however you spell it) too.

And I think I read somewhere recently about lemon juice on cotton socks on your feet? Hmmm, you'd have to google *that* one. Might not help, may have been for fevers, come to think of it. Ignore that!

I was in exactly the same situation some 10 years ago - a cold coming on with surgery looming. The anaesticist (sp?) said that as long as it is not a chesty cold with bronchitis type cough they'll go ahead and so they did, despite sore throat which hurt like mad after the surgery but I survived.

Echinacia is a good thing to try. I, too, would stay clear of too much garlic at least 48 hours before the surgery.

Thanks everyone for all your ideas...

Unfortunately last night wasn't good, i got really bad earache and sinus and headache. Worst ive had for years, and this morning the cold hit with vengeance. :(

Im off to the hospital today to see them and I know it will be postponed for sure. To be honest the way im feeling right now, i dont want surgery.

So its a matter of rescheduling i guess, but will be confirmed today as to when...

Hi Jan,

all teh best. Sometimes rescheduling isn't the worst case scenario. I had my Op despite and it was ok but the surgeon will know whether it is appropriate to operate.

Cant beat chicken soup.. the vit c has been proved a myth.. any herb or suchlike beginning with g should be avoided as it does delay clotting factors.. hopefully they will reschedule you for 3 wks time.

well spoke to the nurse and anthestist (sp!) today and yes a cancel it is. I have a ear infection and sinus from hell so im on antibiotics to clear that up then wait for cold to blow its course.

Hope like heck i can get rid of the most of it in a week, so chicken broth and in bed hibernating so i cant catch another cold! Bit hard when you have 5 & 9yr old school kids.

Im happy actually its being delayed, as i really feel awlful. So a week or two isnt to long to wait...i can handle that..
