Leatherback turtle

Hubby went on his usual quad bike ride on Muriwai yesterday and came across a huge leatherback turtle on the sand with its head completely severed, it had not been bitten off it was sliced clean. Who would do such a thing, is a delicacy or something. I said he should report it, we have photos of it.:confused:

Absolutely report it. Doubt they will catch whoever did it but it needs recording. Is it still there if they want to collect it? Am posting this article written in 2006 with some references.

Report it DOC Bev. They are on one of the endangered lists.:(
It could be happening in other areas for all we know.
I don't think they come this far south very often.

Still not heard from DOC but there was a pic of it on the front of the Rodney Times and it said that it was there on the Monday and a Forest Guy took it away - but my Hubby went there on the Tuesday and it was still there, the pic showed it with its head missing on the Monday?????:confused:
