as my SKYPE camera wont attach to the one I have here :-) Went to look at monitors today and, gosh, I could get a whole new computer system plus monitor for just over twice as much as I would be paying just for the monitor. Now I am in a quandry...what shall I do?
I am very nervous of VISTA...should I be? Will all my files be all up the whack when I transfer them over? Should I buy a 2nd hand monitor?

trademe... just insist the monitor be seen working on their comp when you pick it up.

or we got this system (PII Celeron 1.2Mhz, 256 RAM, monitor, mouse and K-Brd, ex office machine) for $180 from the richmond pawnshop/second hand traders. go check out cash converters and you'll probably find something for $25

I have a new computer with vista sitting on the coffee table in the office waiting to jump onto the desk (it's been there since July) Still using the old mix and match set up I've had for years [:(!]

He said he will set it all up, I think I'm going to have to suggest we 'get a man in' to do the job before I get any action.

BB - I have had Vista (Home Basic) since July last year and have absolutely no problems with it. I in fact really like it. Having said that, if I were to buy a new computer as you are considering, I would go for Home Premium and at least 2GB. I have 1.5GB and it is fine but I doubt it would cost you much to cover the odds.

I know there are "proper" computer people on here (aka Wyseyes and Amie) - speaking of which - where is Grant? I don't think they are fans of Vista but I am, so hopefully they will come on board. Personally, I would wait for the New Year if at all possible. Retailers are going to have to get "real" because there is no money out there.

I have been using Vista for over a year now and have not had any of the horror stories I was told I would get when I was looking. If you get a decent machine with it pre-installed at the factory you should be right. Yes, it is bloatware and does not really do anything for me that XP wouldn't have I just couldn't get a notebook with XP at the time. The constant huge updates do urinate me off somewhat.

If your current machine does what you need it to do and there is no problem with getting files you can't open because your software is too old, then do what K303 suggests and get a pre-loved (!) one at CC or some such. Or check out Flybuys and get a LCD one.

I have both an XP desktop and a Vista laptop. some very minor issues with Vista but more because of my inexperience than a technical issue.

Nothing that cannot be overcome with posting here...

However I find the issues when buying a computer is to ensure it comes (if you are used to using such) windows word etc.

This laptop I didn't get it with, although had an option to upgrade at some considerable cost so went for (via recommendations here, most likely from Ame) Open Office download instead of Words (last week I sent back to me privately an attachment for our board meeting in word, change a few details and then sent it back to me at work all accepted ok)

Look if you are not used to microsoft programmes etc Ame has some excellent suggestions and if I wasn't up there with the little bits I know then no doubt would be 1110% off micro, however Ame is here to give us the alternative and for my money its a worthy consideration.... with Grant's wonderful input as well! we win both ways!!!!!!!!!!

What sort of monitor are you after, BB, old fashioned type (we have one, maybe two going spare, good sizes) or a flatscreen?

I am having to swap to a flatscreen soon as I do a lot of graphics work and need the clarity/detail, but the old fashioned one I work on at the moment is pretty great for anything other than this sort of finicky stuff. Yours for the asking if you want one...you're welcome to come and have a look next time you are in the Cambridge/Matangi area...

I need the narrow (depth) style monitor as I need to clip my SKYPE phone to it.
Cant do that with this old fahsioned monitor :-)
I can get a pre-loved LCD for $170 in Thames with a 1 month warranty.
I have looked on TM but you never know whether or not to trust some of those people??

BB, there is a company called PB Tech in Auckland and one in Hamilton. I helped my parents buy a new computer from there for $1000, with a wide screen, flat monitor. It has 2Gb of RAM (that's HUGE for someone like you and me) and it's super fast - even with all my work on my computer (which has the same specs), thousands of images and video, I've barely made a dent.

My parents also needed a new monitor for their old, slow computer. They are thrilled, my mum in particular because the screen is so big and so super clear, plus she doesn't have to start the computer, then wait for 10 minutes for it to "warm up". I'm sure we could help you move your stuff over if you chose to get a new computer.
