AVG Anti Virus was created by Ronney
This is installed on my computer and to date has worked fine. However, it has taken it into it's head not to install updates and either tells me the connection has failed (which it hasn't) or comes up with the message Invalid Control CTF File and I have no idea what that is.

Anybody got any ideas please?

Cheers,
Ronnie

Hi Ronney, Don't really understand these things that well but I have used AVG for several years without trouble. You may be best to uninstall it and then download anew, reinstall and update.

CKs husband here (feeling objectified by being "only a husband")

A google search got me to the AVG forums. The following link specifically mentions AVG version 8 ( freeforum.avg.com/read.php?12,149708,149709#msg-149709 )

There is another answer (at answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081027013019AA7HnRN ) but I would only try this if the first option does not work.

As an aside being in the IT industry you may find it interesting I don't actually run any virus software. This is what I do to remove MOST of the risk from Virii (Correct plural?) assuming you are using a Windows operating system (XP, Vista).
  • Do not use the Internet Explorer web browser unless absolutely necessary. The rationale for this is that Microsoft make both your operating system and web browser and they have integrated them both. Using an alternative (I recommend Firefox )
  • Do not use Outlook Express email software. The rationale is the same as the first point. (I recommend Thunderbird )
  • Do not use an account on your PC that is an administrator then if something untoward is to happen you may not have rights for it to do any damage. (FYI, I made this change to CKs computer and she was not keen on it at first and possibly still does)
  • If you can, connect to the internet behind a firewall. Your Broadband connection may already provide this or you can load them onto your PC. ZoneAlarm is an example of this software. There are lots of others.
My $0.02 is spent so have a good day.

CK's Husband, do like I told my Other Half, get your own sign-in. Then you can join the Engineer (my Other Half) in your computer geek interests. Thankfully there are a few that visit this forum, to help those less fortunate non-computer people like me, to get things working properly. :)

My only computer advice is to NOT get Vista installed !!!!!

Thanks for the replies and links but Holy Moses, they leave me more brain dead than I already was :D I'm just not confident enough to start buggering around with things that I don't understand and I think it will be easier, not to mention safer, if I take the box to my computer man and he can fix it. Bloody computers, I should have stuck with cows!

CK's husband, I'm sure your more than that so get your own user name and become an entity in your own right[;)] However, I appreciate the time you spent and you found a link that I couldn't when I searched.

Cheers,
Ronnie

I did hear a thing on newstalk zb the other day about AVG, apparently last week they released a dud patch or something, and those people that got it will have problems. Sorry didnt catch anything more specific than that ....Maybe grant or someone can elaborate if they know any more?

Do something.

Before you take the computer away, read this . Looks like the answer is there.

I have been getting these failed updates too and eventually found my way to the forum answers. Basically - if it doesnt update try it again later. It always seems to go through before the end of the day.
