Wondering how many dogs most people on here have?

And secondly, is there a rule on how many a person can have?
Or is it based on "per property"?

How many dogs is too many?!!!

Just curious,

We've got 5. One gereatric lab x; one kelpie, one heading dog and two foxy x collies.

The rules about how many etc will depend on your local council. Here in Dunedin if you want more than one you need a kennel license which involves a fee and a property inspection.

I know I don't have too many dogs because my friend has 11 and 5 is way less than 11 :D

Our Rottie is the only dog we have. Its actually nice just having 1 as we have always had 2 at a time over 30 years.
I think our council will let you have 2 but any more has to be with neighbours consent.

We have just got the one now . As Little LSB said - it depends on your local council . Check with them .

we've got 4 (2 BCs and 2 Lhasas) and the council said that because we are rural we can have as many as we want (!!!!). However, this is the SWDC and I'm not sure I believe anything they say. They took the money though to register the latest lhasa even though he had just been registered in Levin (and they took the tag).

1 Border collie, 1 Huntaway, 2 Lhasa Apsos, Suffolk and arapawa ewe crosses, an Arapawa ram,an East Friesian ewe , 5 cats, 42 ducks , 1 rooster and 30 hens, 5 geese, 12 goats, 2 donkeys, 2 house cows, one heifer calf, one bull calf, 3 rabbits and lots and lots and lots of fruit trees...

I currently have 2, but did have 3 up until a year or so ago :-(
Only the townies have a limit on how many dogs they can keep, without getting a permit from the council.

We've got three, just got another one a few weeks ago. I registered her with the council and they didnt mention anything about how many we are allowed and they know we have 2 already as she added the new one on to them.
I've since read that more than three requires a licence ( FNDC) that you apply for ? But this wasn't mentioned so I'll wait till they tell us. Can anyone here say thats for sure or not??

Hi Laura,

It's done per property not per person and this is what the Far North District Council says:

'
Number of dogs allowed

There are no legal restrictions as to the number of dogs allowed on a property other than those areas stated in the Fifth Schedule of the Dog Control Bylaw 2006 where the keeping of more than 2 dogs requires a permit from the Far North District Council.'

And the Bylaw states:

6.0 Limitation on Number of Dogs

6.1 No person may keep a dog over the age of three months on any land or premises in any area identified in the Fifth Schedule to this Bylaw, which results in more than two dogs being kept on land or premises, unless that person holds a valid permit for that purpose, issued by the Council.

6.2 Every application for a permit must supply the information that the Council requires to issue the permit and must pay any fee prescribed from time to time by resolution of the Council.

6.3 The Council may place conditions on the permit and the holder must comply with them. If the holder fails to comply with the conditions the Council may cancel the permit whereby the holder then must comply with any and all conditions attached to the cancellation.

6.4 Should any issued permit be cancelled by Council the holder will not be able to re-apply for a permit within 12 months of the cancellation.

BUT the fifth schedule shows that the ONLY areas this ruling affects is:

Ahipara
East Coast
Kaikohe
Kaitaia
Kawakawa
Kerikeri
Moerewa
Okiato Point
Opononi
Paihia
Rawene
Russell

Take a look at the fifth schedule maps on pages 16-22 (i think yours is on page 19 [;)]

www.fndc.govt.nz/bylaws/2DogControl.pdf

I'd say that it doesn't affect you and yes you can have more than 2 dogs but it may be worth piece of mind just to call and check!

A good friend will bale you out of jail.
A real friend will be sat in there with you!

Julie, thank you for that - I had downloaded the same thing, but hadn't realised there were so many pages!
We're actually not on any page! I take it it's what's inside the red lines that needs the permit? We're nowhere near any of them, that's probably why the lady didn't mention a permit.

We have ............uuuummmmmm.................11 at the moment. We did get down to 10 but a boy that we rehomed didn't work so we took him back ( and yes, gave them their money back! :D ). We will be back down to 10 soon as my beautiful bestest show puppy that has done sooo much winning....has been diagnosed with epilepsy, he's only 8 months old :( so he is going back to his breeder as we were only showing him for her...then my 11yr old schnauzer girl has burst the last disc in her spine before her tail. :( This has given her a stiff leg that won't work. :( We go day by day with her but while she is still eating, sh.tting, and managing to get round, I think without pain, then she will be here a bit longer.......... :( :( .
We have been told that we can have up to about 15 here......... :D

12 dogs, 6 cats, 1 x Hereford cross /Cassie/Casserole, 7 girlie sheep and of course Rambo and IggyPop! and chooks!

Ahhh interesting - I was just wondering.
I know in our situation we are allowed as many as we want...!!! YAY! But then again I don't trust the stingy RDC at all! hahaha
It's nice to know there are more people with more dogs than us.... but are they inside or outside dogs, or both?
