Junk mail was created by moggy
how do you get rid of it.
When we first signed up for rural mail we did tick a couple of boxes of interest. After a while we were fed up of the amount of junk mail we got, to went into the post office and asked all of it to be stopped. It had the effect of stopping some, but we still get a load of junk mail, mainly shopping mailers (warehouse, countdown briscoes etc) and also a whole load of free newspapers, about half a dozen and only one of them we actually want to read.
Apart from it being environmentally unfriendly producing it in the first place, we then have the task of bundling it up and taking it to the tip.

so how have your solved your problem?

We burn all our paper rubbish in a drum out the back.
Was just talking to our RD man about all the junk he handed over to me today but there are some things I actually like to read and also like to know what Woolies has on special, so I just accept it all gracefully....

Our rural delivery lady only gives out the junk mail once a week on a Tuesday. Its all in one bundle, rolled up with a rubber band around it. It's your choise if you want it find and if you don't then the whole bundle goes in the bin.

Like BB I like to get the Woollies and Countdown flyers to have a look see whats on special,

When my kids had pamphlet delivery runs, they were told that it was a dismissable offence to deliver to any mailboxes with a "No Circulars" sign on it. I know some deliverers ignore them, but most obey them. The local newspaper doesn't count as a circular, so you're stuck with that one, and many Real Estate agents studiously ignore the signs, but try putting a " no circulars" sign up, or even "no junk mail". We had one on my son's run that had "personally addressed mail only" - not sure how well that one worked. Once you've got a sign up, you can ring the pamphlet company and complain if it is ignored.

11 acres (4 in QEII Covenanted native bush), 15 sheep, 2 beefies, large vege gardens and a goat, and still no dog!:(

Oh, and uncountable wild birds - including fantails, swallows, yellowhammers, morepork, magpies, hawks, pukekos, and even quaill, pheasants and rainbow lorikeets [:D][:D] Not to mention possums, hares, rabbits, rats...

OakhengeFarm is absolutely correct. If you put up the No Junk Mail sign on your letterbox, you will not get any mail except mail addressed to you. HOWEVER...that also means that you will not get your local free Newspapers and those I do not want to live without...so I light the fire with the junk mail that I can and take the rest to the recycling plant. You can't have it both ways unfortunetely.

Some place have stickers that you can put on your letterbox stating which circulars you want to receive eg New World have a coupon book one (or at least used to), that way you will get that delivered but your No Junk Mail sticker will apply to all other rubbish. Maybe you could make your own label, No Circulars Except for ......, just a thought. I too don't like all the rubbish it creates. My other pet hate is the junk mail that comes via the newspaper (hidden inside it), AA Directions etc etc, the list goes on. You have to shake all your magazines to get the rubbish out before you can read them!

Talk to your rural delivery person. Ours is really friendly. When we moved in here we didn't get all the rural papers, one conversation later we get all of them. Ours has even come down our driveway(800m long) to deliver a parcel thatwas too big for the letterbox.

Worse than the junk mail, which you can do something about as is shown above, are the unsolicitated phone calls trying to sell me something I don't want.

Today I answered the phone bang on lunchtime. Nothing on the other end and just as I was about to hang up there were lots of cracklings and a voice with rudimentary English piped up saying "Hello, I am so-and-so from Slingshot...." at which point I interrupted and said I wasn't interested. Bugger me if she didn't say "... but if you just let me...." and I lost the plot and told her I wouldn't be allowing her to do anything and hung up. As far as I'm concerned this is a gross invasion of my privacy using a tool that I pay for. Not to mention that it is obviously off-shore which gets up my nose as well. This is the third time I've had calls from Slingshot, all along a similar vein. Mind you, Sky TV took the cake when the guy pushed, I hung up and he had the cheek to ring back and tell me not to hang up on him :D . I gave him full marks for perserverance and full marks for stupidity. The upshot of this telephone marketing is that I wouldn't go with Slingshot or Sky.

Cheers,
Ronnie

I couldn't believe the amount of junk mail we got when we first moved out of town. I just accept it, look at what's interesting and burn the rest. I figure that kids get paid for delivering pamphlets so maybe the rural postie gets a little something extra for it? Could be wrong of course but it's a nice thought.

Where else are you going to find the best deals in computers,TVs and lots of other goodies, and as the others say just burn what you dont want. we actually now have a collection for tins, plastic and papers, so carefully put the papers all together with of course the good old hay string, and make sure that inside the heap, I have put all the junk mail that we dont want, so it looks like a nice newspaper pile. They can sort it at the paper recycling place.

Easy to stop it just tell ya postie, our one has a little sticker they put up at the old house which said "Keep Hamilton Tidy, No junk mail" or summat to that effect!

We have it here now, we didn't at the old place, but the papers are used to light the fire and the furnace and we just chuck on some of the flyers at the same time. The glossy ones don't always light so well though.
