Bluddy Olympics!

I'm probably alone in this, but I really resent the scant 30 minutes in each news hour that we normally get of news (even if not of a very good investigative nature) being eaten into by the Olympics. Put it in the ample time allowed for sports, for goodness sake!

Admit I do not watch too much news programmes but I agree..........the olympics will be interfeering with alot of programmes.
I am only interested in the opening and closing ceremony, and even that will have to be recorded, if I can be fussed.

Well as you all know I'm a really sporting person and shall be glued to every minute!

BD & MD no doubt will be, BD's claim to fame is that his granddad was in the 1924 Olympics and brought home a bronze medal, his dad would have also competed but as the war was on he never did, he was at the Berlin games though when Adolf Hitler shunned Jesse Whathisface!

Love it, makes a huge change from smugby, which is about as interesting as watching grass grow. It's only 2 weeks every 4 years, I suspect you may be over reacting somewhat! And if it saves us from listening to the politians behaving like preschoolers, it can't be bad!

I'm not going to bother at all. The Human Rights issues are too big and I just don't like the whole underlying attitude.

I had quite a squabble with myself thinking how hard the athletes have worked towards the games but then I thought how much loss people have suffered at the hands of the powers that be in China, just to have everything looking 'pretty' for the visitors. At what cost to others that medals be won.
Is achieving the best performance in sport actually helping anyone in the long run.

Nah, it's bad enough there are people in the world really suffering and in a lot of cases dying. Governments can pull together millions of dollars to hold a sports event in a brand new flash high tech stadium, yet they ignore the needs of people (particularly in this case) right under their feet. In fact they increased the suffering of many.

Poorer countries competing don't have the specialist equipment available to their athletes so what is actually winning, is it the athlete or their high tech gear.

Give all the cyclists the same bike and same clothes, then we'll see who is the best cyclist. Same with any other sport... ok... the equestrian is a bit different, you can't standardise a horse, but the whole thing is becoming a major circus of technology and big money.

I vote they either get back to the grass roots of the sports involved or can the whole thing. If they need to run 1500 metres to figure out who is fastest, why do they need a special track, everyone will be running on the same surface whether it's grass, clay, concrete or whatever.

Bah Humbug to this technical wizardry of sports and media hype. With the Human rights issuse going on, the whole event leaves rather a sour taste in my mouth.

People are already complaining that TVNZ is screening certain things on freeview so not everyone can watch.

I don't think china should ever have been given the opportunity to host the games with it human rights record. That said, I have several sports I love to watch, the cycling road race and some of the cycling track events and the triathalon bring a couple of them. And rowing, I love that too.

I think the olympics are great, but I don't think they should be in China.

At least people set out to win instead of all this PC rubbish in schools where it's the taking part that counts! I shall of course be going for gold in the chocolate eating event!

Oh yeah I think I would rather be watching the Olympics than boring and depressing news any day.

There will be parts I will watch maybe. I agree it shouldn't be in china either. Apart from the human rights stuff, I can not understand why they would be held in a place with such bad air pollution. I mean whats the point of winning if the pollution is so bad that you have risked your health taking part in an event that could later cost you ill health or worse:(

I agree it shouldn't be in China, but what can I do? Horse events get NO coverage on TV outside the olympics. Beggars can't be chosers.

Tigger, try channel 3 or prime, or all the other bloody news channels, god knows there is enough of them! Or watch the documentary channel....

I just don't see why team sports like hockey or rugby are in the olympics. the olympics are about INDIVIDUAL prowess. or were, back when the greeks started them, now it's all about TV ratings.

I can understand team sports like the double skulls where theres one boat going in one direction, but I don't think ball sports like soccer where theres a group of players darting around the field fit with the ethos of the olympics.

One person, or one Vessel/Vehicle. drop all the other sports, even doubles tennis.
