I am starting a premmie hat. I am confused by the pattern so help appreciated. I haven't knitted for around 3 years so very rusty.
the pattern is as follows
k1*k1 yarn round needle. p1 p3 together p1 yarn over needle repeat from * to last 3 sts k3.

Now where I am confused and believe me its not hard to. Is when it says "yarn ROUND needle" Is that like totally around the needle like you are making another stitch??????
And the yarn over needle would be like an ordanairy purl stitch???
Am I right?
I don't want to cary on until i am sure as I know me and I will pull it off the needles and forget about it.

Also can anyone tell me how to do the old fashioned pattern called "Basket stitch???

Hard to explain without some knitting in hand and being present! :) The purpose of yrn (yarn round needle) is to leave a loop in the knitting after the following row is knitted, so yes, it's just a wrap around the needle so the wool is ready for the next stitch as usual. A purl yrn and a knit one may go around in different directions, but I had to work that out as I went and can't think without it in hand.

Yarn over needle is interesting. Is that yarn back to the front but over the top of the needle rather than through between, as you would normally do between purl and knit?

Just had a play: yrn always makes the yarn go around anticlockwise if you're looking straight on at the points of the needles, whether it's a purl or knit stitch. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you so much for that Isla. Was beginning to think I would have to pull stitches off and find another pattern. It makes sense and I till give it a try.

Isla I think yarn over needle is as you say. In this pattern, isn't that why you purl 3 together instead of 2 when you've made the yrn stitch? As you say its hard to imagine without actually trying it.

Yarn round needle and yarn over needle just mean make an extra loop on your needle that will serve as something to knit into on the next row. Usually occurs after you have reduced the number of stitches by k2 tog/k3tog. If you get it the wrong way round its easy enough to switch it over. Just lok which way the yarn is running and if it doesn;t look right twist it round the other way and carry on.
