Hey you know the carp that are in the waikato river (and swimming around the flooded roads) could i catch some of these and put them in my pond cos apparently they eat grass and weeds and stuff, or would this be a no no?

a nono, the carp in the waikato are a noxious pest list critter, like the rock snot algae down here. they root around in the mud like an unringed pig on land and ruin the water clarity. if you see any, spear them and feed them to the piggies or your neighbours piggies. good pigfood, but not much good for other things.

I did wonder if they were the ones they got all arsey about. Theres not much chance of them going anywhere once they are in the pond couldn't i just put em in there to eat the weeds and then feed them to the pigs :)

if you want to get the weeds eaten, get some perch or rudd. theres both in the river and they aren't on the bad list, plus they are edible.

otherwise ducks.

Arent' they are delicacy in Europe? I was watching Hugh FW again this week, he kept one in a bath tub with running stream water for a few days to clean it out of mud, and then cooked and served it to his Landlord who was impressed.

Anyhow there is a company here in Aussie making carp fertiliser. I think its called Charlie Carp and its great for the pot plants.. :)

Carp is a delicacy in central Europe - but its a certain variety and I don't think its the same as the Waikato ones.

Regarding - 'they won't go anywhere from a pond': Some fish spread by eggs attaching to bird's feathers when they take a bath and then the eggs go into a different waterbody when the bird has its next bath.

the waikato carp are the giant asian Koi carp, not the edible common carp which is a dull grey.

Through to be honest the common carp is actually the same species the same way as a long haired domestic cat is related to shorthaired domestic cats.

the koi is a common carp bred for bright colours, but the colours seem to be linked to the taste.

The common carp is also a noxious pest in australia and america, but luckily the NZ population of carp is soley at present koi carp, and as such are easier to see and catch.
