I am with Infogen who are, I believe, a subsidiary of Orcon.

Two weeks ago we applied to go on their 10GB plan which promised much faster speeds and a higher download cap. Today we are apparently on the new plan (according to the reply I have now got from my email this morning) yet my BB speed recorded today at 290kb/s when last week we were recording speeds of over 300kb/s. I have also received the bill and been stung for using 4GB over our previous limit (as we were told by the person on the phone when we first applied tat it would kick in within a couple of days so of course we went a bit mad with downloads and then found out, after another phone call that we had to wait until 1st August) plus the new monthly rate for the new super duper BB - so quite a big bill!

I am a little confused. I have emailed and been told that we are indeed on the new plan so have replied asking why out speed is slower than it was last week.

Anyone got any ideas? I know that we can achieve speeds of over 2000kb/s as we were getting these around Christmas time (I think they made a boob and had us on a faster speed accidentally).

I was so looking forward to fast internet and now I am feeling really let down :(

How are you measuring your speed Louise?

Depending on what exactly you are using as a measurement tool, you will get a huge variety of answers.

Let me know how you are doing it and I can advise accordingly.

Cheers,
Grant.

I have used a broadband speed test that is on facebook plus www.speedtest.net/ this site.

Just had a reply from last email:

From your email I understand that your speeds are slower.

There are several reasons that your speed may not be faster, the most likely of these being congestion at your local telephone exchange. Also due to the weather there has customers with services affected.

As your Plan has only changed over today, what I need you to do for me is monitor the speeds over the weekend. If you find that the speeds have still not improved by Sunday night, email me back with the best contact phone number and times for Monday. I will then call you to get some details and will then get our Technicians to look into it for you.

At least she actually read my email this time (I had mentioned slow speed in my previous emails but that was ignored).

Which server are you using for the test Louise?

You need to use the Auckland or Wellington ones for the test to be meaningful so far as local speed is concerned.

It would also be a good idea to post your router's Sync. Speeds. Login to the router's web page (probably at 192.168.1.1 or 10.1.1.1) and look for ADSL Status, in particular the Downstream and Upstream speeds which should be shown in kbps. Post the results here and I'll have a look.

Every ISP blames exchange congestion as a standard ploy. It is just a way of dodging the question because this problem usually does not exist any more, especially during the day.

Having said that, there is the odd exchange which is still overloaded, but they are very much in the minority now. By comparing your router's Sync. Speeds against the Speedtest.net result to Auckland or Wellington, it will be quite obvious if exchange congestion is the problem.

Argh, 192.168.1.1 asks for a user name and password and the other one takes me nowhere ...

Forget the nowhere one, you found it with 192.168.1.1.
Also try admin/admin, or admin/[nothing].

What model is your modem? The user manual usually states the default password.

Hmmm, you will need to find the documentation that came with your router Louise. That should have the User Name and Password written down.

Failing that, call the people you got your router from to get this information. I just hope it's not Telecom with their helpdesk in Manila [:(!]
