If you didn't have to, would you even get in the car today??? Am trying to point out to OH that, given the weather all non-necessary travel is best to be avoided. And the Desert Rd is closed....

No way. Been stuck in blizzard-like conditions, at night on a very windy road, and a normally pleasant 30 mile drive which took about 40 minutes on a good day turned into a 3-hr-long white knuckle rollercoaster home. And that was with 4WD, 2 young children and a full bladder. NEVER again.

You would not be able to get far down here anyway as a lot of the main roads are closed or require chains.

take the coast roads... the desert road may be closed, I doubt the sea route around the base of Mt Egmont is. or if in Tga, maybe napier and down the coast from there and cross over down near the end of the ruahines

just stay below the snow line on whatever route :D

Hide all the car keys. :)

It'd be hard to stay below the snow line at the moment 303, even the hail is thick in places.

It was snowing in Tokoroa last night, and I also think on the Te aroha mountain from reports.
While it was hailing at my place it slowed traffic down to about 30 k/hr so funny to hear the slow state highway traffic crunching on the little white berries and Im no way near the road.. so think the only place to be below the snowline is the CBD of Tauranga

The SOH trying to roof at 300 odd metres above sea level reported hail, sleet and lots of rain...... he wasn't impressed, and was off to a hot shower, soup and bed in the insulated humpy with a good book, column heater and his clothes on![8D] :D :D

We went over to Rotorua yesterday morning (over the Mamaku's) - hubby thought the driveshaft had broken on my truck.. but no, it was just ice. It was pretty scary. And then there was snow on the sides of the road further up. I haven't seen snow up there before.

Yesterday, Sunday, I had to get from Wellington to Putaruru via the coast road - fine weather all the way.

Is the Dessert Road open today?

The PetBus Courier is starting her North Island Trip tomorrow and I'm hoping she can get through.
