Maths!!!! ?????? was created by Ghilly
It was an effort to move the small shelter out of the way so I could get started on this project I have been planning.

I have ropes attached to it so I can pull it about but these have been on it for a while now so I don't trust them not to have rotted to the point where I could end up on my bum.

I was doing ok but then I couldn't shift it. It was stuck on something. I went to the other end of it and shoved it to free whatever it was stuck on.

I managed to move it a couple more metres then everything slowed down.
I thought it was a tuft of grass but no, Tumnus was inside it. I got him out and gave it another shove, it moved a bit more and stopped. Artemis was in it. It got her out and went back to the other end only to have to return to the front again and pull Hanukkah out. This went on until I finally got it where I wanted it.

I got the old shop counter out of the way relatively easily by comparison.

All I had to do then was do a bit of measuring of the old tilta door to see where I needed to put the posts. With the measurements in my head, I started measuring out from the existing shelter, with too much help from Tumnus, Athena, Hanukkah, Cricket and Yakut. Ooh they were all getting in on the act.

I couldn't find any short stakes so I used a couple of standards and a reel of string. 2.3 out from the shelter..... I put a standard in, then 2.3 again and another standard. Then I went and measured the distance from corner to corner diagonally on the door. 3.1. Right! So I went over and measured 3.1 diagonally to where it met up with the 2.3 measurement.

Yakut decided to eat my steel tape.... I retrieved it from her mouth and measured across in the other direction. Then I measured between the two points and found it was way out. I wanted the distance to be 2.1 but it was about 1.8.
I removed the string line, pulled up the standards, wound in my tape measure again and came inside to think things out a bit more.

Maths is like a secret I can't figure out.... I know there is a simple theory in there somewhere, geometrically speaking.....

I pondered over just taking the garage door into the paddock and laying it where I want it, then marking out the area but those DARLINGS of mine would walk all over it and possibly poke holes in the clear bit.

It should be a straight forward equation of geometry...... but I'm blowed if I know. I have never been of a mathematical mind.

Arrgghhh the frustration! Such a simple task it seems but I shall just have to sit down and massage the old gray matter to see if I can unlock any secrets.

I can't help you with the maths either. i am more than hopeless when it comes to things like that. I could just imagine the antics of your wee darlings all getting in on the act. I could just imagine something like Kim following you around with video in hand catching it all. then putting it on something like 2tube. lol

Ha! The sound track would be all beeps, apart from their names and the words, "get out of it", "get out of the way", "I can manage thank you very much", "An entire paddock to stand in and you choose to stand THERE?"
"Yakut you can not eat steel, spit it out, you'll cut your mouth", Leave it alone", "DO you mind?", "OI I need that", "Clear OFF", "Mutter mutter", "Bloody maths!", "That's it, I give up, I need a cup of tea and a think", "You chooks, get out of the way", "Cricket! Don't you DARE run off with that string line!".... etc etc etc.

Oh yes, very helpful.

I know there must some some sort of formula for working out the diagonal measurement but even then, I could end up with a crooked rectangle, is it called a rumbus?(sp?) Where the corners aren't 90 degrees?

Anyway, the whole plan looked a lot bigger in my head than it will be when it's up.

It seems like it should be a simple straight forward thing to do......

Basic geometry, that's what I need! That and some decent pegs to hammer into the ground. The standards may have worked without goats pushing them over rubbing on them and the string line might have been a little more accurate if busy hooves weren't pinging them and being stood on.

I'll have to have another crack at it tomorrow. Maybe I can con them all into retreating for a leisurely munch in the back paddock..... as long as it doesn't rain.

What you need is my OH. I tried to "help" him build yards by measuring where all the rails should sit, marking the place, and then banging in the nails for him to rest the rails on. It turned out that my measurements were almost always completely out.

Not sure if it's his measurements or mine, but I got the blame and once he fixed it up, the finished yards looked great. So it must have been me.

Not quite sure what your doing but if it involves triangles then pythagorus is the man you want to check out.

the square of the hypotenuese(long diagonal bit :p ) of a right angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the two adjacent sides.
If your diagonal is 3.1 and one side is 2.3 then the other should be 2.08.
Doesnt matter if its in inches cms or kms the theory is still the same

:D So ya don't want to hear Betenoirs theory...doesn't matter how inaccurateley you do your working out and measuring ...it'll still fit if you hit it hard enough with a sledgehammer[:I]

Oh Yakut, I love reading your posts. I can soooo relate to this, but my key board is covered in apple juice now!!!
To make sure that you have a square corner, yes you do need to use pythagorus. You need a calculator!!!

a 2 + b 2 = c 2
So take the measurement of the short side (a ) and multiply it by itself. Take the measurement of the long side (b) and multiply it by itself. Add these two numbers together (c 2). Then use the square root function on your calculator: that’s the key that has √ on it. The resulting number is the measurement of the diagonal line (c). If you make sure all the lines are accurate, the angle where the short side and the long side meet will be a right angle.

You don't actually need to do the calculation though. For each post you need two other points as references but you don't need to know the numbers - just two lengths of string of the appropriate lengths will work and where the two meet is where the posts need to go. If you can draw a picture it would be easier to explain.

To get the corner to be a right angle measure out from the corner 3mtrs and 4mtrs the other way and form a triangle from those 2 points that should be 5mtrs from point to point. Just use the same formular in feet and inches.
As i am getting old i accept no responsibility for this.

I'll give it a go.... Thanks Anne.

I measured the door, 2.3 x 2.1 .... then I measured the door diagonally and got 3.1.......

The bit I couldn't figure out was, if I measured 2.3 out from the existing shelter and tacked out the string line so it was exactly 2.3 metres away and parallel to the shelter, then measuring 3.1 from diagonal corners should give me a rectangle with equal corners, ie, 90 degrees? Well.... it didn't.... I had a measurement of 2.1 along the existing shelter and something like 1.8 on the parallel line...... Ooooooh I'm so confooooooosed....

Maths is a bit like the Masonic Lodge, all secret to those not in the know.
I WOULD have maybe been in the know if I had been able to get my head around it at school but there has always been a brick wall between me and the logics of maths... Apparently that's all it is, logic but you need the logic key, once you've understood the rules of the logic, it should all slot into place nicely. My logic seemed to consist of why? and why not?.

My mind just sort of glazes over and I develop a 'scotch guard' against understanding. No teacher, no matter how interesting they were, could get through the scotch guard, all it did was create a fuzzy picture. Letters of the alphabet were STOLEN to insert in various sums when the answer was unknown.... what's that called? Algebra? Hmmmm.......
26 letters in the alphabet, infinite numbers so the mathematicians PINCH the finite letters and drag them into their little vacuum of black hole answers......

It's a conspiracy I tell you. It's like not knowing the password to the answers, not knowing the combination lock.

As for ratios and fractions in measurements.... well they are there to confuse those who have lost hair getting the answer as far as they did.

Kim worked out something for me on the calculator the other night....
I have one wall 2.3, one wall 2.1 and another wall that will only need about 1.6 worth of covering allowing for a doorway. SO! That's about 6 metres to cover with boards that are .150 wide...... how many boards will I need?

Buggared if I know? The calculator said 3.333 repeating (or something with 3's repeating. That was without the measurement for the 1.6 wall....

SO! Does this mean I will need 30 boards of 1.8 long to wall the structure?
Plus a few extra for the 1.6 bit...... How many times does .150 go into 1.6?

See,! My mind is in knots. I'll give the Square root thing a try as soon as I can find a caculator. When exactly do it throw the funny tick symbol in?
I can't even do fractions or percentages on a calculator.

Maybe the time between learning all this stuff and actually being able to put it into practice is too far apart. Hell, who am I trying to kid. I didn't get it when it was being taught, sure as hell aren't going to be figuring it out now.

When the teacher asked me for an answer and I gave it to them, right or wrong, I never really knew how I'd reached it much less explain it. Some were right up there in the realms of hopeful fantasy.

If you don't know how to put the ingredients of the recipe together you can hardly expect the outcome to be anything like the photo of the lovely cake in the book now can you.

Mathematical potions.....

I'll have to get it sorted one way or another. WHERE'S my pencil and paper and that well used rubber.

I'm glad it's the tail end of autumn I'm going nuts and may shortly fall from the tree. You don't think my mind and your mind MM have run off for a wine tasting trip around the BOP do you?

Ok, well Princess Valium has kicked in and is telling me to kick back.
I need the electric blanket on, the goats have been attended too and all have been fed. All I have to do is get my sorry butt into bed, Easy? you'd think so wouldn't you..... ah but I am a master at Tutuing, even with my eyes and brain at half mast. La la la laaaaaa

Oh, and you know what! I have slightly pulled a muscle in my arm! I must have put it under strain when I was trying to move the goats shelter with a goat hidden inside it. I certainly didn't get it from rolling me own fags.... there again, you never know![;)]
