I've been getting regular mammos since turning 50. My next appointment is next Thursday. What's a little bit of discomfort compared to your life.

Im not old enough for the freebies yet...but why is it 45? i would have thought the earlier the better as no woman no matter what age is immune from breast cancer.

I did have one done about 10 yrs ago and they wanted to do a biopsy. I was so scared, I never got it done (stupid I know). Since then i have lost a friend and 2 family members (hubby side) to cancer ( not breast cancer though). As Im still here i am presuming it was a cyst but I'm wondering if I should go to the doc and get it rechecked.

My Gyn/surgeon told me that these days age is nothing. This is when she told me to go and have my first mamogram. At that stage I was around 42, I told her I wasn't old enough yet lol. She then told me that that was bulls***, she said that she has woman in their 20's in her office who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and that it was becoming all too common.

Spoook i do know how mind numbingly devestating it is to hear your doctor use the c word. BUT, hey Im still here and in remission so I am living proof cancer is just another illness not an automatic death sentence. I am so impressed with the courage you have shown to put this out there, and with the reaction of those who have made appointments. You say you have hit the internet, but please be circumspect as to which sites you visit because there are some truely cruel and upsetting mongrels posting all sorts of rubbish.
Also I found talking to a councellor very helpful as I held back when talking to family and friends because I didnt want to hurt them. With a stranger you can say everything you need to.
You have the courage, you have the support to deal with this, work on adding a positive attitude and you will do well. Is it DCIS (still enclosed in the duct?) Smile Hon and buy a BIG block of chocolate for afters.

Valmai, I have the chocolate already :D
No food or drink after 7am, my op is about 3.30pm[:0] I had better be out of recovery by dinner time. Then again, I assume they will feed me when ever I can eat.

Jan, please go for your check. If there was doubt years ago.......... [:0] please [:I].
If you don't then this thread will be wasted.
You may have been scared of the biopsy but it is not as bad as the alternative. I am only losing a small part, if I had left it, I may not have one to fill that side of my "over shoulder boulder holder"
Let me know when your appointment is please. :(

GM, thanks for your email. That was very kind [:X]

Jan if you are at risk or there is a suspicion that there is a problem your GP should sent you straight to the breast clinic at the hospital and it should be completely free.

I've had mamograms yearly since I was 29 and never paid a cent.
Please get it sorted.
I think it has already been mentioned several times, but get your smear done as well. A routine smear at age 29 gave me the oportunity to raise my children and enjoy my granchildren. Had I not had that I wouldn't have been here to see them grow up.

Aha, there is the next bane of a woman's life. A few years ago I had a scare too. Fine now.
I have had to postpone mine, it was next week. Mine has to be done by a specialist, don't think I will feel like it for a week or so. A needle where the sun don't shine [:0].
No more needles for a while please after Monday..... please.:(

Thanks Kats, the reality is sinking in slowly. I'm managing to keep occupied as we have several batches of runner ducklings in pens, a cow down after bloat (we are keeping a close eye on her, I would like her to be up today, vet is handy if we need him :D) plus all the usual daily chores one has anyway.
Want to re-dose for lice in the goats and check their feet, that should take a bit of time.
Have not had much sleep, brain is spinning with things to do in the next week or so while I am fully able bodied . I already have a huge (mental) bag ready to take with me on Monday.;) Lots of reading, must remember glasses;). Must weigh some GT mags to see how many I can carry ;)

Just had my hair trimmed, the hairdresser said she did not need a mammogramm as she was not yet 45 !!!!!!!!!
Needless to say I explained things a little to her.
In this day and age how can we NOT know, plus it is Breast Awareness month too!!
She did not even look like an ostrich and I could not see a bucket of sand in sight either[}:)]

Tomorrow afternoon / evening will be the hardest, better be a good movie on TV :(

Well Spoook you know that we will all be ' with ' you on the day . Take care . Speaking from experience you will feel a huge relief when the lump has gone.

What chooky said.:) It is not a very painful op either, more a discomfort/odd feeling, although if you are anything like me you will not feel comfortable sleeping on your stomach for quite a few months.
