Kapok filled duvet??!!

Just reading Cow Mad's post about buying baleage off trademe, that turned out to be full of dock. :(Well I bought a "wool-filled duvet" that turned out to be full of kapok![:(!] It was advertised as new and the photo showed it in its bag with a big label on the front, of a very good brand, made in NZ, 100% wool etc etc. The trader is a good one with plenty of good feedback and no bad, so I was confident. It arrived today and yes, it looks new, but it is flat as a pancake which I thought was odd, also, that it had no tag or label on it. I was getting suspicious, so with a fine crochet hook I was able to pull a bit of the filling out through a large sewing machine hole in the stitching, and there is no way it is wool. It's not a synthetic either, it is definitely some sort of plant material, very fine and silky, exactly like kapok (I'm old enough to remember kapok). The burning trick revealed it is def not wool as the smell of singed wool is unmistakable. It smoulderd and smelled like cotton rag.[xx(]

I have e-mailed the trader and explained all this. I'm hoping to get a refund as I can only assume that this duvet is not the original occupant of the labeled packaging! But I am still stumped as to what the filling is. Anyone got any ideas? It's not polyester. Surely they don't make kapok duvets?! Or could it be raw cotton? Does anyone know what that looks like? Or silk? I have seen silk filled duvets advertised. Very weird.

Could your duvet be filled with eiderdown? I live in a cotton growing region, and the stuffing doesn't sound like raw cotton.

Thanks LY, no it aint down or feather. I am still stumped by this mystery duvet. I can't believe anyone would stuff a duvet with kapok these days. In fact, I don't think kapok was ever used in a quilt.

I dunno what this fibre is, it's very soft and very fine. Not wool. Guess I'll never know. I'm just hoping to get a refund so I can get rid of the horrible thing! lol:confused: :(

They actually still make kapok filled pillows. I looked at a site using bamboo fiber to stuff duvets. Here is the addy if you would like to see a pic of the fiber. www.ioffer.com/i/31607291

Personally I think the duvet is stuffed with the chin hairs of the African
dik-dik. :D

Thanks for the links and info. No, it's not bamboo fibre. It's come down to a toss up between the chin hairs of the dik-dik and the dock weed that they couldn't fit into Cow Mad's baleage.

Fortunately, the seller is a very nice lady who has kindly offered me a refund on the thing, so I am feeling somewhat pacified.

No, the trader refunded me my money and I sent the jolly thing back with a suggestion to her that she return it to the place she bought it and complain that it is not wool. I would have loved to have opened the darn thing up and got a good sized sample of the filling, but thought I'd better not mutilate it seeing as I was not keeping it.

I have enough flybuys points to get a Fairydown wool duvet, so have ordered that. Still trademe is usually pretty good, I just got a lovely brand new, good brand wool underlay for $30 so I'm happy.

Now I'm on the lookout for a wool pillow. Gotta be 100% NZ wool, no polyester, and hopefully untreated with chemicals. Anyone got any ideas where to buy?

Thanks Dunard, just down the hill there in deepst Wanganui (by the way are you for the "H" or against it??). The Fairydown ones are the same ones at Maruia and they have a polyester middle section. I will probably end up getting one like that, but I'm going through an anti-polyester phase at the moment (don't ask me why, I don't even know! lol).

What a lucky lady you are. My wife and I have two sleeping bags bought many many years ago both filled with Kapok. It is a fabulous natural filling that beats almost anything else. I would like to replace them but kapok filled duvets or bags seem to be a thing of the past. Please tell me where you bought them. Also have a look at this link: www.rainforest-alliance.org/kids/species...6Vk7kCFS3HtAodNWAAUg . You had something quite rare expensive and wonderful for sleeping.

Regards
