We've got a border collie who is now about 5 years old and I am thinking more about what I am feeding him. He gets Tux biscuits, some Pedigree bites, and meaty bones and fresh veggies and whatever else ends up going his way - a pretty varied diet really. I was thinking that his joints will probably become an issue at some point and so I found this syn-flex glucosamine product on trademe: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=155100050 . Does anybody know about this or similar products, and is it worth trying? I wanted something I could pour over his food in the evening.

PKB - can't vouch for the product advertised, but I can say from experience with OH that he now takes glucosamine tablets for the last year and swears by them. He has had about 4 operations on each knee removing loose cartilage etc and his knee joints used to lock up a lot, so sometimes when he was walking he'd do a slight "trip" at times when one knee locked.

Now he's been on the glucosamine, he says no more pain in his knees plus no locking up etc.

If it works for us humans, no doubt will work for dogs too!

You would be better to get this type.......
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Equestrian/Care-grooming/Other/auction-155126911.htm
1/4 teaspoon a day goes a long, long way

We have been giving it to our older working dog with great results.

You must realize, once you start giving it, you will have to continue or the dog will return to the state/ condition it was.
I am not sure glucosamine will stop the onset of problems, so could be wasted unless there is an issue. You could get some and then use it when the time comes.

BTW, Jess is still coming out to work when she feels like it :D

Thanks spoook. So glucosamine only works as a treatment for an existing problem rather than acting as a preventative? Maybe I should think again.
