Has anyone had pleurisy?

What a crappy day...yesterday was a bit uncomfy around my ribs at the side, but thought nothing of it - hadn't done anything that might have caused a muscle pull. This morning the same, but from around 11am it progressively and rapidly got worse, to the point where I went to a medical clinic - I honestly thought I had cracked a rib somehow! Driving was a nightmare, the grimaces on my face must have been a picture, and I was yelping every time I changed gear or had to apply the handbrake [xx(].

Doctor says inflammation around the ribs area, she said that she almost thought pleurisy, but that my lungs sounded okay and there was no pain when I coughed, although hurts when I breathe deeply.

So have been sent away with a rather strong cocktail of pills for the pain - expect to go nigh-nighs quite soon [:I] - and instructions to head back in if pain gets worse, a fever develops, or shortness of breath or lungs start feeling cloggy. Yay. Oh, and no driving.

Anyone else had pleurisy? All I know is that it was mentioned in a Fred Dagg song involving gumboots! [}:)] I certainly don't feel sick otherwise, but it spasms/hurts like hell when I move in certain ways, but no pain when I push on the area...

Have you been wearing your gumboots then? Only a couple of the cattle have had pleurisy around here, and that came back on the kill sheets. [}:)]

Good old Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleurisy

"Pleuritis, is an inflammation of the pleura, the lining of the pleural cavity surrounding the lungs, which can cause painful respiration and other symptoms. Pleurisy can be generated by a variety of infectious and non-infectious causes. The effects of pleurisy can often be felt long after the condition has gone away."

I remember years ago having something similar when I had a bug where the cough just wouldn't go away - at the time the doctor said he thought I had torn a muscle through the coughing (I had the cough for close on 4 months and it was quite startling to hear [}:)]).

This time - nada, nothing, no cough, no croaky lungs, no recent bugs (well, none that have caused any symptoms).

Stumped. As long as I sit reeeeeaaaalll still, it doesn't hurt ;)

Yup - I have had Pleurisy...... very painful. I remember I was lying (lieing? sp)[?] on the floor in front of the fire and I pushed up with my arms to get up and felt like a 'riiiip' and couldn't move!!! My OH had to help me up off the ground, very painful trying to breath out...... and move! forget it!![:0] Once you get into a comfortable position.....DON'T MOVE!!! Sorry can't help you further.
Of course I hope you feel better soon - goes without saying! [:I]

I was sure it came with a chest infection. Sounds painfull:(. Sure you haven't done some lifting or something out on the block and pulled something. I sprung a rib out of the cartilage that joins it onto th chest boane a while back and it took me ages to figure out how I did it. Boy that was painfull.

I hope it settles down soon[^]

Yes - I've had DRY pleurisy but it was so many years ago I am struggling to remember what it felt like. I do remember that I was out of Senior School for I think a month (at least - possibly two) and when I went back, the teacher wiped the blackboard of chalf dust and I was gone - straight to the headmaster to leave school. I nearly choked to death on the chalk dust!

There are two forms - the dry one I had and the one where your lungs or whatever fill with fluid. My instinct is to say you do not have pleurisy but more likely a strained muscle but am only guessing. Get them to do order a lung Xray at the local hospital and then you will know. The fluid version can mean getting your lungs drained so you really do need to know I would have thought. All the best and I hope you don't have it and you get better soon!

Doctor is convinced it is not a pulled muscle, and it certainly doesn't feel like one. A2J's description is most accurate...I had a lie down before and when I tried to get up, I can only describe the pain as being comparable to when I was first out of hospital with internal and external stitches [xx(].

Luckily the painkillers appear to be kicking in, I certainly will heed the warning and not operate any heavy machinery, the way I am feeling at the moment even a bicycle would be risky! [}:)]

Yes, TKP, I thought it went hand in hand with infections too. Can only see what happens in next couple of days.

LOL! I had to laugh, I googled it too, and on the world google, it was all about humans. If you limited it to NZ all you got was pleurisy in lambs and sheep :D

It sounds also like what I had too about 12 years ago, from coughing so much they thought that I had strained a muscle in my chest (around my side). I had xrays but they couldn't find anything, they also thought it might be leading to shingles. All I remember is it lasted for months and was really painful, I cried.
