try another DVD in the player that the problems occuring with? could be a dirty read head causing errors tha require re-reading to the extent it appears slow before the error checking software in the player decides it ok to route to speakers?

could be 2 things. either a dirty read head or software probs.
dirty head means you'll have to buy a CD that looksl ike it has velvet or billard table baize on the bottom, and a spray to damp it with, this cleans the glass of the laser and read head optical pickup.
First check the software. press the "start" button to the bottom left of the screen. choose the "my computer" icon, which will bring up a folder with the drives, cd drives, dvd drives etc. Right click on the DVD drive icon and select "properties" then along the top of the pop up window that will appear, select "hardware" then when that brings up the properties display "troubleshoot"
following the prompts, there should be an option of "is it playign slow, not recognising disks or skipping." or something similiar.
If that doesn't help, back in the "My Computer" folder right click the Hard drive icon (C: drive normally) select "Tools" then "Defragment now" and while that's working, go do something else, it'll take a while to finish.
"Defragment" tidies up all the files and parts of files and stacks them neatly to hand ready for use. much like doing a stocktake and tidy of the kitchen cupboards so you no longer hunt for the pot you want while swearing at the gremlins that stole it
If neither of those help, you'd best get a CD cleaning disc...
