Following on from the thread on China and my comments that people don't vote with their spending power:

www.nzherald.co.nz/section/3/story.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10504681

Whichever way the ANZ tells this story, that is 500 (according to them, extra) jobs that could be done here.

So who's changing banks? [:I]

Perhaps we could take 500 people off welfare and make them work instead?

How about outsourcing the 500 jobs to Mosgiel and taking on the poor buggers who will lose their jobs at F&P? [;)]

tigger... I thought the same thing...who is changing banks? If I banked with the ANZ (which I don't) I would be walking my dollars out of there TOMORROW! It's damn tempting to walk right out of NZ at the moment! What the hell is going on with our Govt who put millions into supporting teenage mothers, "sickness beneficeries" (that is tongue in cheek for all those doctors have been forced to move people off unemployment benefits) migrants, families with combined $140,000 incomes, familes earning $70,000 paying NO tax, and watch so many companies shutting down and going off shore. More people through no fault of their own probably going to have to spend any savings they have and join the welfare organisation.

During some research I was doing today, I discovered that 37% of "Aucklanders" were born overseas. And the population of Auckland is.... I should add that the research I am doing is to do with the ARC wanting a one shop for all in the Auckland region (from Te Hana in the North to Pukekohe in the South) but basically to meet their requirement for investment in Regional transport and infrastructure to meet the huge growth.

i worked in india for 2 1/2 years. they didn't have any problem employing me, i don't have any problem employing them.

anz's primary responsibilty is to its shareholders not its workforce.

personally i don't think anyone's owed a job because of an accident of birth.

I don't bank with the ANZ but I popped into a branch yesterday to change a $20 Aussie note . The very helpful teller told me in a whisper that they charge $5 to exchange foreign monies. She also said - go to Westpac over the road - they don't charge so off I went . So out of the 22.50 I got for the $A20 ANZ would have taken 5 from it [}:)][}:)][:(!][:(!].

What the hells wrong with all you wingers. Put your money where you mouth is and buy shares in theses companies and enjoy the shareholder benefits. If you think these companies are making too much money then buy their shares.
They are all listed on the sharemarkets

Hey, I'm happy being naive and believing that most of the money that a company earns from a community should stay in that community through jobs, etc [:I].

Unless you are in a majorly sought after job grouping (ie not banking staff or similar) bsadler, I'm guessing that the work you did for India was done in India and they didn't outsource your input while you were living in NZ? In other words, they spent their money on someone living in their 'community' who then returned a good chunk of that back into their community whilst living there?

But I couldn't profit from something knowing that people were losing their jobs, sorry I have this thing called a conscience.

You're not from around here, are you? The sense of let-down on such an issue is based in the culture of this country which has been so rapidly changing over the last two decades. We are a small population and we all owe our community and our community looks after us. That includes the businesses we support. Hence the disgust at them all being own outside of our wider Kiwi community and no longer upholding their side of the deal.

Hear, hear, Tigger!

I'd LOVE to put my money where my mouth is... unfortunately I have to turn it into FOOD first!
Some of us don't have the means to fritter money taking risks on the share market... we're too busy trying to live.[}:)]

Don't customers already pay a heap of money into banks? How is this move going to benefit them? Cheaper fees and mortgage rates? Don't think so somehow.

How come only the shareholders opinions matter? What about the stakeholders who keep the banks running through their business?

Isla: My forebears got off the 2nd ship into New Plymouth in 1851 (the “Amelia Thompson”). My ancestors fought in the Maori Wars (and all the others we got involved in - happily on the winning side each time!). My grandfather was a co-founder of St. Mary Diocesan girls’ school in Stratford and which my mother attended. I was educated at NPBHS – as was my father - and Massey. I’ve owned my NZ farmlet since 1983.

So, in answer to your question, I’d say: “yes, I’m from around here”.

My suggestion is to find someone else to patronise.
