Spoook here.....................
Ok, I have a USB modem I connect to my laptop. Sierra Wireless tells me I am connected but...... when I open Internet Explorer......... nothing!!! [:(!]
Last time I used my laptop, a couple of weeks ago, it worked fine. I have checked for viruses, nothing.
Have rung Telecom but they say they can't help me, it is in my settings.
I have checked, to the best of my ability, but can find nothing wrong.
Any ideas?????????????

What about your e-mail client, Outlook Express or whatever. Does that work by any chance?

I would check the connectivity first.

Go to Start Menu, then Run...
Type cmd and hit enter.
This should bring up a black window with some white lines. Ignore them.
Type ipconfig and hit enter.
You should get back information on all your network connections.

There should be one for your wired ethernet port (even if it says 'cable disconnected'
There should (maybe) one for your Wifi port
You should have one for your Sierra Wireless connection.

If any are connected correctly, then you should see IP addresses, subnet masks, gateway addresses.

It's a start, then go from there.

Yes, a good tip from Wyseyes there; it will show you what is going on.

Thinking there could possibly be a problem with Telecom's Mobile Broadband network, I just plugged in my Sierra Wireless card to check, but everything is working fine.

Here is what I see from IPCONFIG:

PPP adapter - Telecom 3G:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 166.179.27.7
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 166.179.27.7

I suggest posting the result that you get Spoook, and maybe it will shed some light on what is happening.

Obviously, you will need to use Kate's PC to do it, same as you did before I guess.

Start, Run, COMMAND should do it.

Then type IPCONFIG then Enter, you should see something similar to what I posted above.

Heh, I just found out that the Run item is not usually visible in the standard install of Vista.

Try this...

That little windows key between Ctrl and Alt? Hold it down and hit R.
That will bring up the run box. Then type cmd, and away you go.

OK, there is your problem.
THe IPv4 is good, the mask is good... the gateway is baaaaad!

Basically the gateway is the computer that yours talks to, asking it for this website, or that website. The gateway computer then goes off to get the website, and returns it to you.

The gateway address is allocated to you by the telecom system, looks like their problem. It may be now that you know this you have ammo to argue with the helpdesk about.

Would you like some phone troubleshooting?

Thanks wyseyes, it turned out to be the Vista update that stuffed everything up. kate did some research which found others suffering.
I just did a system restore.
Bugger me, I took my laptop into hospital and the damn update happened while I was not looking. Caused the same problem again, had to do another system restore!!
Have turned off auto updates but I noticed another update awaiting unstallation.
I think I will leave it until things settle down a bit here.
