Helicopter

Excitement here yesterday.

An Air Force helicopter hovered over the hill, someone jumped out, and 5-10 minutes later, got back in.

The kids were fascinated.

I don't know why they were there or anything.

we had a Hercy bird buzz us noticably lower than the hilltops each side of the valley yesterday. rang the airforce base at blenheim and they say it will likely happen again several times over the next fortnight, but weren't able to answer my question as to When the next one will go over as they're just conducting training as and when their conditions allow. so It'll be luck of the draw if I'm on a hilltop and able to take a photo of a big fat four engined plane buzzing the cows and goats below me

I vagley remember there being a civil defence exercise at some stage, maybe that is what it is. I have just been into Porirua and they were doing some low flying and hovering over what looked like Porirua park

If any of you have horses, it may pay you to get in touch with the Defence Department and let them know you wish to be notified if the Helicopters are going to be going just over your place.

Reason = it happened to us and how the old TB survived is anyones guess. They were around 30' above him as they flew in over and over again. I grabbed a halter to go and get him but by the time I got there, he was completely terrified and thus too dangerous to handle. You could have filled a bucket with the sweat that was pouring off him.

My own TBs down in a valley could see and hear them and even they lost it galloping around like lunatics.

We subsequently got an apology from the Department and an offer to pay any Veterinary bills! Lot of good that would have been if any of the animals had had to be destroyed. All we wanted was to be notified so we could move our stock BEFORE they flew over them. One of my horses had just had $130 treatment and that was all undone but I didn't claim - just wanted to be considered. They have let us know once since but not the last time - that was explosions! Guess they don't "get" animals.

Girlfriend just e-mailed me.

They landed in her son's school to re-fuel. Her Master 6 came home saying they were looking for 'Drug Plants'

Update just heard them come back

They're looking for cannabis at this time of year. They seem to start up around Nelson / Lower North Island (I assume they look further North, too, but I don't know when they do that) and seem to work their way down the South Island. They'll be down here in a bit.
