Hi everyone

We're looking at purchasing a lifestyle block that has previously had a timber mill on site. Soil levels have been taking and capping has also being done. Although- levels or Boron and PCP are at 'residential use' acceptability not 'agricultural use'. Has anyone here purchased land that has been contaminated? I was thinking of fencing that area off and just growing trees there, but it does take up a chunk of the small lifestyle section.

Any advice would be appreciated!

thanks
Ingrid

I would be concerned about your water supply if it comes from a bore on the site? Other than that, unless you plant your veges in that polluted area it should be ok.

5 acres, Ferguson 35X and implements, Hanmay pto shredder, BMW Z3, Countax ride on mower, chooks, Dorper and Wiltshire sheep. Bosky wood burning central heating stove and radiators. Retro caravan. Growing our own food and preserving it. Small vineyard, crap wine. :)

Down here with land that is contaminated with DDT the owners are permitted to grow fruit and veges but not run meat or milk animals on the land. This is because the contaminants tend to concentrate in the animals, and a large portion is eaten than when eating the fruit and vegetables off the land.

true, it's getting harder to find clean land anywhere these days, even old orchard sites have to have the topsoil removed before they can build. Most people are completely unaware of this as nothing seems to show up on the LIM?
