Hi - Paul and Laurie, just bought a 3.3 hectare lifestyle block and are complete novices so this forum will be great for those questions we feel stupid asking. We're in rural Carterton and so far have 6 chooks, 1 mother hen and her 3 chicks, a kitten and looking to get some weavers next week. We have a large variety of mature fruit trees and Paul (a chef) is busy pickling and jamming and making chutney etc. We will be doing homestay too and we hope to start a small business from the block. Paul has also done cheese-making courses so would be interested in expanding on that.

An idea we have is to set up a bartering system for services or produce and would seek ideas or thoughts on that.

Have you thought of AirBnB? If you have a spare room you could make some cash. Try wwoofing if you need extra help around the place. You can find answers on here using the search box, most queries are in here somewhere.
Welcome and good luck.....

5 acres, Ferguson 35X and implements, Hanmay pto shredder, BMW Z3, Countax ride on mower, chooks, Dorper and Wiltshire sheep. Bosky wood burning central heating stove and radiators. Retro caravan. Growing our own food and preserving it. Small vineyard, crap wine. :)

Thanks Tony - we've thought of Airbnb as we do have a spare downstairs room and bathroom but a bit reluctant due to not being there all day. We may try and catch the lions tour though until we get a cottage in the garden built.

There is a Green Dollar exchange group in Carterton so contact them because they use a sort of bartering system. I think you go on a list with whatever you offer and people who use you add credits to your 'account' and you use those credits to get things for yourself. They have a market day fairly often but the I-site at the Event Centre should have a contact.
