We finally managed to escape Auckland and move North. At this stage we only have 2 acres and may look to buy more surrounding us, wait and see. Grew up in Auckland so living in a rural community and learning about farm life etc is a learning curve but am enjoying life and the locals have been absolutely awesome. Wish I had made the move sooner. Great website by the way and it has already been a huge help. Wishing everybody the best for 2017.
I grew up in Auckland, hubby is originally from Invercargill so what to do with a block of land in the Far North has been a fairly steep learning curve for both of us. We are mainly orcharding at the moment and mostly it's "try it and see" in terms of what thrives and what dies. Stone fruit seems to do amazingly well, raspberries did nothing but send out endless runners all over the place, we have yet to get an avocado tree to survive, and having done well for a number of years this year half our grape vines turned up their toes and died (think the winter was just too wet for them on our clay soil) but it's all part of life's rich tapestry
Thanks Runamuck, nice to know that we are not the only ones to move North, we both grew up in Auckland.
We have a small orchard of mainly apple and plum which seem to be doing Ok given that they appear to have been neglected and need pruning as well as treating for lemon tree borer, destructive little critters. We hope to try avocado as well along with macadamia. I hope to eventually replant the orchard over time using seeds and cuttings from the original trees. Sorry to hear of the grape vines dying. Our neighbor did say it had been a very wet winter up here.
