Hi, I am shaking in my (riding) boots but my horse mad land owning drive is a force to be reckoned with.... I will take the plunge and explore a rural lifestyle around Rangiora-cust-Oxford, my vision is,a small riding centre. i am a teacher and counselor and want to integrate my teaching background and years of pony Club Coaching. What area would you think would work best? And how much land? I am also keen to rent something first for me and my partner and my horse... I appreciate your help and feedback. Thanks! Ute

Ute, a few years ago we shifted from over the water from you...Beachlands, to North Canterbury. And love it. There are a few riding schools and a number of people who teach specific riding skills (ie dressage, western etc) either from Cust Domain or from their own places. Hard to say what area would be better for you not knowing what your speciality is. What would be your point of difference to the others that already operate do you think? Cust has an adult riding group that you can join and for fifty dollars a year have access to the arena, round ring, yards, and great float parking...I don't want to put a damper on your ideas, but maybe phone around and see what is needed.

In terms of land amounts, most blocks around Rangiora, Cust etc are ten acres. Once you get into Oxford you can access bigger blocks of land. Oxford is probably considered a bit far out for those without a horse, living in town, to come out regularly for lessons. However people go out to View Hill on the outskirts of Oxford and to Loburn, so it does happen. You could look at Clarkeville, Mandeville, Swannanoa, Ohoka, Cust and Fernside as well.

On the other side of the coin, if you decided not to teach riding, but to just indulge your love of horses. The weather is superb, the grass verges are wide, there are rivers to swim and ride in, stop banks to ride along, and long sandy beaches...bliss

Dear Trace, thanks so much for your lovely and super encouraging response! Fantastic to hear that. Yeah I think Oxford is gorgeous but probably too far out as I will have to get a job...looking at a nice property in Fernside , 10 acres with an arena. Cool to hear about the cust riding Club, ohhh exciting! Thanks again

Oh , my point of difference...being a counselor and coach I specialize in helping riders to push through anxiety issues especially after losing confidence due to trauma or a fall, elimination, memory blocks, body tension that affects the horses and riders performance negatively. I use mindfulness and awareness exercises to stay present and connected with the horse.thanks again for your helpful and thoughtful feedback

Good to have a niche in the market...I know, no one in the Cust equestrian group specialises in building confidence. I know iof one person in Loburn who does on a one on one basis, so if you were looking at Fernside that would give yourself a different locality to them (and I have no idea of their methods so your way of teaching could be completely different to).

I am very excited.....adventure time. You have been so kind and helpful, really eased the nerves....lol rode on Waiheke beach yesterday and it was crazily busy....had four photos taken of the horse (and me) and my mare spooked at an anchor, a paddle board and a crowd of tourists....peaceful it was not! Haha .

You will have to consider what is required to comply with OSH. It can be a killer of starting up your type of business. Years ago we had a big horse stud (normally 50 odd horses, including 3 stallions) on an amazing 870 acres of hill country near the west coast of the north island, right in the middle of the tourism area. But after buying back quite a few of our own horses, and others of the same breed that would be suitable, we found that the regulations were so strict and impossible to adhere to, that we sold the horses off again, and did not follow our dream for a really good horse business.
