Teach me about sheep! was created by kellyh89
Hi all,

I am a keen young lass who would like to get to know the ins and outs of sheep farming, but am unsure where to begin. Have had very little experience on a farm, however love the hard work and problem solving it entails.

Would love to esp. learn how to handle sheep correctly, shear, drive a tractor - am willing to learn anything!

If anybody around the mid-Canterbury area could assist, or point me in the right direction it would be muchly appreciated!

It's coming up to lambing time so some places might be glad of an extra pair of hands, especially if they're free. Could you put up an ad in your local farm supply store (CRT, Farmlands, PGG etc)?

I suspect that most of mid Canterbury is dairy now, so finding a sheep farm might mean you have to move inland. Also talk to the livestock buyers and sellers to see if they know of someone to contact. PGGWrightsons will have different offices than the retail store. There might not be a Farmlands in Ashburton, but there is a farmers co-operative. Alliance freezing works have their own stock buyers so you will need to phone them to get their livestock buyers contacts.
Remember that there are wrong ways of farming, there are better ways of farming, but there is no best way of farming :-)).
Good luck.
