Greetings
I'm a newbie who has just acquired some land in the Diamond Harbour area near Christchurch. We have a nice north facing paddock we are hoping to convert from pastoral grazing to fruit trees, natives, bees and some crops. I'm interested in off-grid power, sustainability systems, rain harvesting and getting to know the community.
My background is environmental science and pollution control.
Phil

Hi Phil, welcome to LSB.
Are you sure you're in the right part of the country for rain harvesting? [

Hi Phil, we're not far from you, just over Gebbies Pass, and there are several of us off grid in the area. We'll be harvesting rain once we have a roof, too.
Lots more water storage needed than for those in the wetter parts of the country, like Ruth.[
] Then again, those with cattle, like Ruth, need lots more water.
We've used about 20,000L in 11 months for household use, but don't have a garden yet needing watering...the tunnelhouse we just bought will add to those requirements![:0]

Just 2 people, and one fairly thirsty dog.[

We have been very careful in some ways, we have the most water efficient washing machine we could find, and we do up to 3 loads a week. One of us can shower at work, so that is a big saving. As the water runs to temperature in the shower, we collect it in a bucket and use to flush the toilet as required. And we hardly ever mop the floor! [:0]
But we have chosen for harmony's sake to use a dishwasher 2-3 times a week rather than have stuff piling up on the small bench, and a food disposal unit is used briefly for food waste once a week, as that won't attract rats and possums like compost might, and feeds our worm septic system, so isn't wasted, as that then waters and fertilises our orchard...
All that 20,000L we have brought in on a trailer, 1000L at a time, when we are heading into town for other reasons.
We can get a wee bit of runoff from the portacom we are in, and we use that for the orchard trees as they are newly planted, so need supplementary water.

Hi and welcome PRoss. You are in a lovely part of the country. Good on you thinking of bees, there can never be too many. I wish you well in your endeavours and hope to see you again around here.
