haha nope not a biscuit: a macron is a diacritic. It is shown as a horizontal line over a vowel in Maori (there should be one over that "a"). It indicates a longer vowel sound.

I have always found it amusing that one Government Department that does not follow the convention of the macron is Inland Revenue, where they use the double vowel: Te Tari Taake. Perhaps they don't want it to be read as "Take"[]
