I've been a frequent visitor to this forum for a few years now but now that I've finally moved back to the mighty Waikato from Wellington I decided I'd sign up. My new home is in Te Pahu a short drive west of Hamilton and I really love it here. I'm only renting at the moment but I have a great relationship with the owners. I have a free reign of the land that I am on and I also have access to other areas of the farm that are no longer in use.
I was thinking of starting with a decent vegetable garden and a few chickens and see how things progress from there. I'm certainly loving that I have more than just a 4mx4m courtyard these days

I'll probably ask a lot of questions as it's been over 25 years since I've lived rurally and I'll try and throw my 10 cents worth in now and then too.
Aku mihi nui!

Just off topic, can anyone tell me how to edit my avatar/profile picture? When I go to "Edit Avatar" if doesn't give me any options apart from "Do not use an Avatar"

Oh, and Ruth, interestingly, the macrons show when replying in a thread, ie, as I scroll through now, they're there

best way to make a vege garden is a raised bed, don't bother with wooden sides, just dig deeply 1.2 metres wide bed and however long you want it.
Make half metre paths on each side by digging and throwing the soil onto the bed. Fill paths with sawdust or whatever. If you can cover the beds with Microclima cloth that will keep out birds, chickens, and a bit of frost.
As far as chickens go, it is easier and safer to take the food to them, ie.. all weeds and kitchen scraps. If you let them free range, you will have poop on your doorstep as they love company. Believe me, a little chicken shit goes a long way!!!
Finally, whatever you do stay well away from registering for GST, however tempting it may sound at first.
