Family of 3 just purchased a 4ha (10 acre) bare block here in Canterbury. We do have a water bore put in by the developer but that's about it, now need power trenching and connection, buildings, house, shelter belts the list goes on! :)

They say it's a new adventure and I guess it is but when you start looking into it, the costs are overwhelming but worth it in the long run ....right?

Welcome.

Worth it? Depends what you're measuring. If it's a money-making scheme, never. If it's for the lifestyle on the land, definitely!

Welcome dkjhoops. We're just like you, bought a 4ha block and will have a bore and fences. Rest is up to us and there is a lot to think about.
We are 4km from Cust and still waiting on resource consent and title. Where in North Canty are you (we could be neighbours)!

The S part of LSB means either and sometime both "Sentence" or "Style". LSBing is a 24/7/365 job, so you need to organise animal or crop carers if you ever want to have a holiday.

It is always going to make sense to buy an already developed property as what you put in you will never get back - unless you are there for many years. Value is a funny thing - bare land and you have the option to do what you have dreamed of (just remember central racing is 110% top of the list for handling animals) but it will cost you more in the long run than having bought an already established property. Mind, I doubt there are many available in your area that haven't been priced out of the market by demand so maybe already established is not the same in Canty. Bit like Herne Bay in Auckland?

Well it,s all happening now folks! House sold and moving onto our bare block possibly in a caravan! Many thanks to Richard and team at I-Spark for settiing up the power on the block, all we need to do now is get that water out of the bore so that we can shower, drink, cook and survive lol. If anyone can suggest a good/great fencing guy in North Canterbury?

Fencing guy - Andy at lifestyle fencing. Try him :-) He's awesome and if you want to help him out when he's doing it he wont make you pay so much (esp if you're trench digging which you can do yourself) .... good luck, and well done on the sale :)
