Thought I better hurry up and introduce myself before continuing to gleam valuable information from all you helpful forum members.
My name is Joanne and I live with my partner on a small block of land in Marlborough.
We seem to more around a lot- this is my 14th piece of real estate I've owned .Keen to stay put for awhile now.
We've had 5 rural properties which ranged from bare blocks, where we relocated houses, to older villas in need of renovation.We also done the alternative power thing which was a great learning experience.
I'd describe myself as a practical get stuck in sort of person and have learnt many farming and building skills over the years.I do a lot of creative art projects and have many ideas for alternative approaches to building and everyday activities.
I'm very keen on information sharing. I see a lot of sense in forming groups of small block owners who barter with each other for services and products.
Instead of individuals trying to do everything like egg ,dairy,meat,fruit,vege production you just focus on one aspect that you really like doing and which suits your block of land.You then swap amongst yourselves- what a varied interesting diet you'd have.You could also co-share machinery -imagine the savings !
If anyone out there does this already I would love to know how it's going.
Currently on our farm we have domestic cats and dogs,cows,goats,
sheep,quail,hens,pigs and a horse.
Hi and welcome! On the barter idea between neighbours, I'm planning on a neighbourhood get together in the spring to put this idea to everyone around here. Makes a whole lotta sense to me .
Hi Seeker, welcome, I grew up in Blenheim until the age of 16 where I got dragged off to the UK. I remember in the early 70's all that land covered in vines, used to be bare farmland, my Dad was in the airforce and was based at Woodbourne.

GK - I wondered when I met you if I knew you - Blenheim is my old stamping ground too - I was at Girls College there from 69 to 73. Family still lives there - lovely place
1 Border collie, 1 Huntaway, 2 Lhasa Apsos, Suffolk and arapawa ewe crosses, an Arapawa ram,an East Friesian ewe , 5 cats, 42 ducks , 1 rooster and 30 hens, 5 geese, 12 goats, 2 donkeys, 2 house cows, one heifer calf, one bull calf, 3 rabbits and lots and lots and lots of fruit trees...
Eeelcat, small world huh, we used to live in Hutcheson street and I went to St Mary's High School, we left for the Uk after my dad got out of the air force, that was in 1970. .
