Hi there, been on our block of land now for 6 weeks and looking forward to getting some livestock on our 2.4 acres. We would like a couple of cattle (for beef) and 3 lambs. Any advice as to what we should be looking for, when to buy, what we should deffinitly have etc. Hope to hear from some helpful LBer's :)

Hi Ontoit, if you look for a likely post from the last couple of weeks, you'll find discussion on why you simply won't fit that many animals and a house onto 2.4 acres! What part of the country are you in, because advice will differ depending on your region, for a start. Welcome to the forum. :)

Ruth Glen Murray is about 45minutes south of Pukekohe. When I first moved to Pukekawa I had a beaut little one hectare block with 2 horses and I bought a pet Hereford weaner and 2 goats from the Glenbrook Farm Park. I moved on in late summer so the first winter was fine as the calf and goats didn't eat much and I was feeding everyone daily anyway, but come summer the grass dissappeared and I was feeding twice a day along with micro managing the grazing. In the end I had to sell and buy 10 acres instead. You'd be fine with a few sheep but 2.4 acres is not enough for a beast IMHO.

Yes, I guess you learn something new everyday ah! Hi Cinsara, nice to hear from you, we brought 3 pullets off you last year...they are going gang busters and loving the extra space we now have. As a beginner to this Lifestyle stuff, where is the best place to pick up lambs?

Its probably not the best time of the year to buy lambs as most ewes are going to the rams now and unwanted animals were probably culled much earlier.
Friends of mine picked up a mob of sheep a couple of weeks ago at the Puke markets on a saturday for $70 each,
Just remember if you buy there, you pay gst on top of the bidding price
There probably is no market tomorrow because of easter?

Did you read the classifieds on this forum.
If you buy or put a wanted ad on the classifieds, it gives you a chance to check them out and see if you like them before buying and its good to buy things not in a rush, particularly your animals
Then there is trade me

Ha small world, glad you finally found your piece of paradise :-)
They sell sheep/lambs at the Saturday morning sales at Puke as Muri said or the Tuakau saleyards but I can't remember which day they do sheep off hand. A quick phone call to the yards temselves, or Wrighsons will answer that Q for you. If you ring Wrightsons when they open tomorrow they will be able to tell you if the Sales are on in Puke. There will be some orphans around before long if you want to bottle feed some, just make yourself known to the local sheep farmers.

Hi ontoit, I am in Ngaruawahia, I have just under 2 acres and run two cows, a couple of goats and the usual chickens and ducks. The cows are now 14 months old and doing well, so far enough grass to keep everyone happy, but has to be well managed and there was a little feeding out that happened. Have finally got all paddocks fenced so much easier to have a rotation which allows grass to recover.

Laurette, mother to Eamon (16), Sebastian and Cheve (angel cats) Henry and Bellatrix cats, Sadie and Billy Bob(dogs) Rocky, Lola and Hersephone (rainbow goat) (Goats), Sparrow and Esme (cows), 6 chickens , 6 Khaki campbell ducks, tadpoles and goldfish.

Good going LMCL65 but we have had an exceptionally unusual grass growing summer. In a month or two you will notice how much more an adult bovine eats.
