First time writing on a forum here! I am living in West Eyreton, Canterbury, we have moved here 8 weeks ago, we have 4.2ha of land and a house! The previous owners left the land in such a state of disrepair we are virtually starting from scratch! First up, we attacked cali thistles (obviously ongoing), we have prepared a section for orchard trees (40 trees coming this winter), irrigated the land etc, got some pullets (now laying), and have just today set up the electric fencing for a couple of calves to keep the grass down!
I will defo be on here checking things out! As we're so so new to all this - we are totally unsure as to what we'll do with the land as yet, just trying to keep it under control is this years job!
Welcome to the forum! We're just over in Oxford. Good idea to get the feeling for the land before you do much else with it, especially with winter round the corner! Hopefully you can make it to the area gathering in July (TBA). Cheers!
Welcome to the area - we are a tad further east from you but our long-time friends have also recently moved to West Eyreton. They have the land but not the house yet, and are camping in their paddock while waiting for the final sign-off from the insurance company (it's only been 17 months since they lodged their EQC claim).
Their son and my son recently were at the same swimming non-competitive competition cluster, which was pretty cool to be almost-neighbours.
Good luck with those calis - they are very persistent, but they can be beaten eventually... so I've been told.
