Hi there, My wife and I have 10 acres in north canterbury that we purchased last year, we are just starting out in the ways of semi self sustainability etc. We have 5 steers and 2 dogs at this stage with plans for more animals. Our place is a blank canvas at the moment and we are excited to turn it into a great little farmlet.

Hi pete ..... ummmmm ...... dogs are a delicacy in some parts of the world, but I suspect the Wife might get a bit upset at being asked to cook one ..... .
Don't overstock. In some parts of North Canty, 1 steer per 2 acres would be plenty of stock, unless you can irrigate.
If you are planning to eat your animals then I would suggest a rotation of 2 yearlings growing to kill size and 2 calves growing to yearlings. Make hay out of spare grass because you will need to feed out during summer and winter. Remember that it is absolutely illegal to sell meat.
