Small LSB....

Hi guys,
I've been lurking on this forum for quite a while now and we have finally moved to a small lifestyle block near Cambridge so can legitimately join in! We have recently moved to a fairly run down little place with only about one and half acres. I'm loving it so far and keen to get some animals (will be asking more questions on here later on...). We were left some chickens by the previous owners, and I feel fine looking after them as I used to be quite heavily involved with rare breeds and showing chickens and ducks back in the UK (about 15 years ago though....). Thinking of getting alpacas, and would absolutely love some miniature donkeys (but worried the neighbours might object to the braying, and also don't think we have enough land really).

Unless you can lease some land from a neighbour, I suspect that your ambitions are bigger than your land .
We have 19 donkeys .... and a mini horse .... and other stock. We never sell donkeys unless they have another donkey or a horse for company. Ours are 10-12 hand so are mediums and weigh 150-200kg so are 1 per acre (3-4 sheep size). The horse is 120kg (and is tiny beside a suffolk sheep), so I guess mini donkeys would be 80-100kg (1-2 sheep).

Thanks for the local contact details LongRidge, I shall get in touch with them and find out more about donkeys. They just seem so appealing because I used to be heavily into riding as a child and adore horses but a severe accident left me with a permanent disability so I don't think I'd ever get into riding again and don't want to encourage my children to (but wouldn't stop them if they insisted!). Donkeys seem an ideal alternative, and two miniature ones could possibly fit on our land. I know they can be quite noisy though so that does concern me (not for us but for the neighbours complaining). Our nearest neighbour is about 500m away...

Hi Jems, welcome! We are also out your way (Matangi), and also have a small (but it keeps us busy!) block. We have a couple of Goats which we milk, this years kids at the mo-all 6 of them, and chooks.
