Hi, I have just had the time to discover what the LSB website is all about. Lots of times when searching online for how to do something I ended up finding my answer here so I thought I would give it an extra look tonight, and wow - the site looks so usefull I just had to join in. I was hunting for info on freezing feijoas which led me here tonight. My partner is Maori and about 4 years ago I moved in with him on his ancestor's land in the Hokianga. I think it is about 6 acres of mostly sloping land facing north. From empty grazing land we are re-vegetating our waterways with flax and cabbage trees. We grow the bulk of our vegetables and an increasing amount of fruit. I have a 100 tree mixed orchard planned which I am slowly populating with trees from cuttings, pips etc. and bought ones when i can. We have 2 horses (and a new foal), a house cow, a pig, a dog and a cat, chooks and ducks, and a kunekune pig, 3 sheep and more chooks to join us shortly. We avoid chemicals as much as possible but would not be certified organic yet in every area. We are trying to achieve self sustainability for our own family while treading lightly upon the land, with a mix of pockets of grazing between native plantings, and vegetable gardens and an orchard to feed us. I am so delighted to join this site as I won't feel so alone with regard to animal husbandry now - all I have for reference is a vet book, a Practical Smallfarming book and the net for answers, and now you.
