Ha ha...that would make sense wouldn't it - but no we don't. The property used to have a lot of oaks, but they have succumbed over the last 90 years to various demises until there is just one healthy live one left. However the owners of the original dairy farm who were here for 35 years named it Oaklands and we (4 owners later, but now just the original farmhouse on 2 acres) have kept up the tradtion.

Hey Jen...

What am I doing - worrying about the people who own lifestyle blocks in Taranaki and don't yet know what Yellow Bristle Grass is. It is a current and very worrying subject in my area, and is what prompted me to join this website in the hope I can spread awareness. My mission...should I decide to accept it...!!

Good to see another 'Nakian' on board. Your username is a dead giveaway of your location to us locals. "Yellow Bristle Grass" is a new one on me though

Organix!

Yup - always good to bump into another 'Taradise' inhabitant! So my username is a dead giveaway hey?? I don't think we're the only property in the Naki with that name, but if you're nearby and think you have the right one - you should see if the horse in the paddock matches the one on my avatar - ha ha!

Yellow Bristle grass - we need to talk if you have rural land of any description - but especially if you graze things!! (and your avatar suggests you might). E-mail me if you seriously want to know more - it is a serious subject and the explanation is not short. I'm trying to get the time to post a thread about it but the last one I tried was too long and vanished into the ether never to be seen again!

Look forward to hearing from you if you're interested.

Just searched up Yellow Bristle Grass and am now forewarned, with photos :)
As we don't buy in hay, etc or use contractors I expect our risk is relatively low but thanks for the heads-up.

Regarding your username I assumed it also features on your roadside wall if I have the right property.

Don't have any roadside walls...but do have our name on a large slab of wood attached to the roadside post and rail fence. Sound like it fits??

Hmmmm. Don't wish in any way to belittle your efforts re researching YBG and well done for trying, but importing hay and using contractors are only 2 in dozens of ways to get your land infested. Have you looked at your roadside recently? If you're in any of the Inglewood, Lepperton, Hurangi, Tikorangi areas for instance - it is RAMPANT along the roads. I'm just off actually to photograph the infestations along Te Ari Rd East - they're horrendous. This beastie has occupied the roadside for years - but now it's jumping the fence.

You can walk it in on your boots, drive it in on tyres of cars, tractors, farm bikes, etc - maize cutting season is all go at the moment, and how many truckloads of cut maize are going past you with bits blowing all over the road and into your paddocks? If there was YBG in that maize paddock (increasingly common - saw a really bad case in Sth Taranaki 3 weeks ago) as it was cut - it's probably just been spread into your place as the truck went by!

Its a fluffy-tailed assassin I tell ya!! [:(!]
