Hi Grant

You seem to have a bit more experience with rabbit hunting than me ( I wasn't even born in 15 BC [;)]), what's a good way to approach people about this? At least someone is offering you pukekos, my thread just seems to be going for the record of lowest number of answers...

Regards,
Hanna

Do hares count? Seen a few here and I'm in Hakaru (between Kaiwaka and Mangawhai) also pukekos and possums and possibly some NASTY feral cats [:(!]

Little fish, big pond [^]

You'd need far more than an air rifle for hares and feral cats. I'm a keen small game shooter with all the toys, and believe me, a .22 rimfire is the minimum for those two pests. I have shot the odd rabbit and possum with a high-powered air rifle but it's extremely marginal for the job, esp possums which are very tough animals. Hares are virtually never within 50m and often 100m+, and even high powered air rifles have a maximum -effective- range of 35-40m. Nothing worse than a wounded animal limping away..

I sorted four hares on a farm yesterday with a .223 ( a high powered calibre), closest about 80yds and the farthest at a laser-measured 217yds. I'll be checking out another farm today

we're in Franklin/Bombay area

We have a few white and brown spotted bunnies who are insistant on digging up my garden and bulbs, they are semi tame too - you can get within about 15 feet before they'll move unless they see the dog...lol

If you want some easy pickings, let me know

Cheers

Hi Leonie, if you do have a bunny problem I have been known to pot the odd one. I would be keen to come over and give them the message. Of course if you wanted the back legs or whole animal that would be fine. I have a couple of friends who are keen to have some rabbit for the pot and I don't have any here, just possums.
