We get our new large walk in coop with attached run delivered on sunday and the dorky planner in me cant help but wanna make a list of the chooks I want lol

After having the hylines and having eggs come out of our ears we are more keen on the prettier side of things and want them as pets / garden ornaments :)

Keeping in mind I run a day care from home so they need to be breeds that dont mind kids

This is what I was thinking 1 of each of these :)
Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire red which is better?
Coronation Sussex
Plymouth barred rock (already have that one sussed get that 20th jan)
Orpington which color is nicest? i cant make up my mind!
Wat are other nice breeds i havnt thought of?
Can u have bantams in with the above Id quite like a silkie or 2 or are they 2 small to go in with them?

Theyll have a large run but will be able to free range all arvo - evening

Flyers? any of those prone to flying more than the others? we clipped our hylines and they lived out the front and never even tried to jump over our 1.2m front fence. These new guys will be out the back but if they were ok could spend some time scratching out there.

Right wat else?:) when we decide on breeds etc wats the best way to get them? Marina got me into the rare breeds website is that the best way to go about it??

Thanks in advance for the advise guys!

I can answer a few questions based on my opinion.
Re orpingtons -blue are the nicest colour.
New Hampshires tend to be better layers, but Rhode Islands are prettier.
Barnevelders would be another pretty choice.

wyandottes are nice looking fairly good layers & docile same with dorkings, orpingtons are all nice looking. none of them are very good flyers..
pekins & silkies would be great with kids.

Having Orpingtons myself I totally agree with Nora, Blue is the nicest colour. Splash are 'different' and black has a beautiful oil colour through their feathers.

They are my favourite chicken breed and don't fly much, pretty lazy, they don't even attempt to get over any fences.

Great temprement.

Have to say though, if you want chicks, then buff are by dar the best mothers of Orpingtons.

Hope this helps.
