Hello everybody. My wife and I bought 14 acres at Mandeville North (that is 15 minutes from Rangiora) last November. I have had a lifetime involvement with farming, and this is our “retirement” block. We call our little farm “Finegand”. This goes back to the name of my ancestor’s property in Scotland. My forebears brought this name with them to South Otago in 1852 and the local freezing works are located on part of the original farm, and have the same name. We thought that it would be appropriate to call our little place Finegand.
Since buying our property we have baled 700 bales of hay, done lots of fencing and bought 20 weaned Friesian x Hereford and Angus calves. We also have three Halfbred hoggets for the freezer. We had a very dry autumn here and got hardly any pasture growth. The calves are getting fed up with eating hay every day, but they have come through the winter quite well.
