hi folks,
just introducing ourselves.. craig and suzy roam around 5 acres(i'm old enough to work in acres) in central hawkes bay, escorted by a small flock of large turkeys. 5 chooks, 5 sheep, 2 heifers of the black and white variety(blondie and sox), 3 cats, 1 blue heeler and 3 emus.
we live in a converted woolshed and love every minuite of it(well almost)
there is always something to do, build, fix, water, feed... but the night sky is incredible and the peace and quiet is good for the soul.
hope this finds you all well and happy
cheers,
craig & suzy

Welcome to the site, guys :D

After moving to our 3acres after living for 10 years in central city, I know exactly what you mean about the peace and quiet being good for the soul! [;)] Apart from when there are possums snuffling round your house, as we had last night, the little blighters [}:)]

Take a break...while I take care of your home, your block, your pets, your stock! [;)] PM me...

Hi Craig and Suzy and welcome to lsb :D

It is a wonderful lifestyle, isn't it? What do you do, if anything, with the emus?

Cheers
Kate

hi again.
the emus are affectionately known as the offspring..(as in - get off, bugger off, and(the f word)off...
they are the most curious birds and working in 'their' paddock is a challenge as anything shiny (tools, buttons, sunglasses etc) are fair game to be snatched and run off with...
they are about a year old and their heads are at chin level, resulting in the loss of the odd beard hair (mine).
they will produce eggs when more mature and the eggs are great eating, about baseball size!!
very friendly and with the most beautiful eyelashes they were our first livestock and provide great amusement if not a lot else....
cheers,
craig & suzy

I really like Otane. One of my father's cousins used to live in Williams street, right by the railway line. I hear what you say about the sky at night. It is so dark you can see the stars clearly.

Up here we never truly get "dark" nights. too much light skipping off the clouds from the city street lights.

Did you know, that what you thought I said, was not what I meant :S

back again,
no internet at home(going down the solar power, composting toilet, recycling grey water route...(yeah, aging hippies)) so keeping complications to a minimum but work(four letter word but essential for keeping cashflow happening) has good internet...
nice to hear from you all and we will put in our 2 cents worth occasionally.
most of our animals have character from my old moggy who is losing his marbles at 18(dont bite the hand that feeds..) to the heifers who are becoming increasingly friendly and welcome the odd scratch behind the ears (well who dosen't)
cheers for now,
craig & suzy.

Is it emus or ostriches that only have one mate? If emus and you don't have a male for each then your household egg supply will be "different" to say the least.

hi,

this is interesting to us too as the emus are not mature enough to tell the difference yet... we remain curious...

I don't know how to sex emus .... but I guess that care is needed :-).
I'm fairly certain that emus are monogamous, which if you have 1 male then one of the females will lay sterile eggs. When I thought about emus and ostriches 15 or so years ago, I think that I was told that they don't lay in nests but just drop the eggs whereever they happen to be. If so, and you do have 2 females and 1 male, then you won't know which eggs are worth hatching.
