Hi,
I'm living close to the Whangaroa Harbour and I have a very small patch of land that is entirely a flood plain .. stressful in winter ... but I love living here and my goals are maintaining and improving my house, orchard, vege garden and utilising my paddock which I refer to as the lake in winter .... how does one make a lake/paddock useful ... a neighbour grazes it which is great so then it's clear for the winter water to get away ... I have also just acquired 2 hens and a very young rooster .... my parents had dairy, sheep and dry stock farms so I vaguely remember the lifestyle which was constant work ... I like to make jelly jams and mix it up with various combo's and I do like to cook Thai food .... I am looking forward to learning new things via LSB and getting work to help maintain this lifestyle ....
cheers
Nana in the Hood (nith)

Ooooh, I love whangaroa - my FIL used to have a boat up there too and we holiday at Tauranga Bay EVERY year just along the road. I reckon its one of the most beautiful harbours in the country! As for a paddock that floods - what about a rice paddy :))

Ah, Whangaroa. Our favorite hidey hole. We have usually sailed the yacht up there for the past 15 years at Christmas and given the BoI a big swerve.

Whangaroa sunset over Taratara from the back of the yacht.

Hee hee! Or if it floods deeper, geese?
One of the farms in our valley gets flooded on occasion - you know it's deep when the swans move in rather than ducks[;)]

Hi Nith
We are up by Puketi Forest, not far from you. Now that the once in 150year floods are occurring a bit more frequently :D esp around Kaeo, I think a kayak would be useful! :) and a house on stilts essential!:o

Some people are so poor, all they have is money.

Hi Nith! Welcome. There is an article in the Feb issue of LSB magazine which might interest you, about the way chinese farming works with the groundwater rather than trying to control it the way we do. Have a look, there might be some inspiration there. Apparently Kiwi fruit really like water running through their roots, so maybe you should start a mini Kiwi orchard!

Tomorrow is the day I will stop procrastinating.
