try cross stitch, you can pick it up fairly easily and do small designs for cards that don't take forever. Then you can move onto projects as big or fancy as you like.

Hi Sundays
I learnt to embroider - wool, shadow, smocking etc, about 15 years ago and just love it although i have barely touched it lately. I found taking lessons for a term was incredibly helpful and really enjoyed the classes and the girl chatter that went on - it was MY big Wednesday morning out. I did these classes in Aus but i'm sure something similar would be run here through night school or embroidery supply shops.
enjoy it, its such a great past time and people think you're terribly clever!

I used to love doing embroidery, drawn thread, cross-stitch and hardanger, and thought nothing would replace it for a hobby ... until I began quilting. Now I'm in a quilt block swap and have to embroider something in a circle for 2 blocks and do you think I can do even the most simple embroidery? Not!!!! I've been agonising over this for a couple of weeks now, and am having trouble finding my embroidery hoops as well. Unfortunately machine embroidery isn't an option as the person whose block I'm working on doesn't care for it. Bit of a dilemma.

Sundays, I agree with Moggy - cross-stitch is an easy thing to start with and there are sooooooooo many wonderful patterns around to choose from. Working on Aida fabric to start with will make it almost foolproof, and then you can progress to other fabrics. Another thing that is quite fun to do is a sampler block, where you can try out all sorts of different things but in small quantities.

Do you have a present or project in mind for someone that has made you want to learn embroidery?
Cheers, Mich.

Oh actually, thinking about it now - I think I meant cross-stitch! [:I] My sister in law once made me a beautiful picture behind glass and framed and it's of the most beautiful horse head / neck profile... amazing colours, soooooo realistic, looks like a photo from afar!

Sundays :)
