Carded wool gone musty

I was given wool that has now been in storage in a shipping container for several years. I pulled it out today and the bags smelled a bit mildewy - I've pulled the wool out and it looks and feels fine but smells the same way. What can I do so that I can start to use it?
Any help appreciated.

Hi there, Holly. I haven't actually had that problem so can't speak from experience, but perhaps putting the wool in a breathable bag, e.g. pillowcase or old net curtain, and hanging it out on the clothesline on an overcast day in the wind might help.

If the shipping container is anything like ours, it heats up and cools down, and there can often be moisture on the inside walls, so a bit of mildew is quite possible. Wool can retain moisture, so if there's any chance the bags weren't sealed properly or they had air holes in them, that could be a reason for it smelling.

Once you've got the smell out, perhaps keeping it inside in a cardboard box or fabric bag might keep it fresh.
Cheers, Mich.
