Embroidering on knitting - help!!

Embroidering on knitting - help!! was created by Fritta
I want to embroider a silver fern on a baby's knitted jersey.
I've tried duplicate stitch, chain stitch, backstitch, fly stitch, stem stitch - nothing looks right and I'm just fluffing the little jumper up in the process.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.:confused:

What about embroidering it on to a small piece of felt the same colour as the jersey and then sewing the felt "patch" on?
